Howdy Franchise Owners,

Week one is in the books, and what an exciting week it was. The difference between the top and bottom scores was 120 points! Three of the top 4 point getters this week were Quarterbacks, and Banks Robbers QB is Troy Aikman, pictured left, with 48 total points.

A reminder: if you see any problem in the league scoring for any team, call or contact me right away. Once week two starts, week one scores will be final. There was exactly one team to take advantage of Banks Rule, and that was Dean's Orcas who swapped Minnesota Kickers, Davis for Sisson.

Week One Results:

A refinement in the "Picks" category, and yet another reason it isn't too late to start. The prize will be figured on the ten best weeks of the fourteen that we play. Of course, only Tony, Dean, and I got in the first week, but you can still jump on this bandwagon. You couldn't do any worse than our commissioner.

This weeks results: Tony is 3-3, Thom is 3-3, and Dean is 0-6

From now until the Supplemental Draft, I am providing a new feature called the All Star Free Agent team. These are the guys that aren't playing for your franchise yet, but they keep right on scoring anyhow.

Click here to see where we are sitting next week, (Aisle 133, row 30) to see Broncos and the Seahawks duke it out.

Remember, lineups are due Saturday Night at 9 p.m.

Week Two Schedule:

September 8 1997

Good Evening Franchise Owners,

The talk of the town is Drew Bledsoe (left) who managed to connect with eight different receivers in his first two games. Big fantasy points for Drew weren't quite enough to help Mike's Marauders to a win, however. Dean's Orcas had the highest score this week. Nobody quite had the muster to make Banks' vaunted 150 point club. And Green Bay lost. Which way to the Twilight Zone?

The SFFL Annual Football game was a blast. We were in great seats to see the Seahawk fumble runback for a TD (Seahawks led at the half) and in those same seats to see the Hawks blow their cool on a two-point conversion after a Denver touchdown early in the third that seemed to pull the whole game down with it.

A reminder: if you see any problem in the league scoring for any team, call or contact me right away. Once week three starts, week two scores will be final.

Week Two Results:

Now everybody except John (0-2) and Shawn (2-0) is 1-1. This week is the beginning of Divisional Play. Or for some, just playing for position in the Supplemental Draft. If Brian's there, I still owe him a beer.

Remember, it's still not too late to start the Picks! The prize will be figured on the ten best weeks of the fourteen that we play. This weeks picks:

Tony picked Phantoms, Ospreys, Trojans, Mariners, Knights, & Robbers (2-4)
Dean picked Phantoms, Buckheads, Marshalls, Marauders, Knights, & Robbers (1-5)
Thom picked Phantoms, Ospreys, Marshalls, Mariners, Knights, & Robbers (3-3)

Cumulative Results: Tony is 5-7, Thom is 6-6, and Dean is 1-11

Last weeks new feature "All Star Free Agent" team has been cancelled at the request of the commissioner.

Remember, lineups are due Saturday Night at 9 p.m.

Week Three Schedule:

September 16 1997

Buenos Dias Franchise Owners,

Kerry Collins led the Secretary's team, Thom's Phantoms to a Monday Night upset over Shawn's Marshalls, the only unbeaten team in the league. Unlike last year, with two undefeated powerhouses duking it out in week six, we have great parity within the league. Undefeated in their division are Bank's Robbers, Jeff's Wizards, Brent/Doug's Ospreys, and Thom's Phantoms. Of course, there are more divisional matchups this week, so stay tuned...

A reminder, the Supplemental Draft is coming up sooner than you think - right before week six. The date is October 4th and the location is in Prosser, Washington - exact location to be determined.

This weeks Byes are Arizona, Dallas, Philadelphia, and Washington.

Week Three Results:

Picks

A correction in Dean's week one score - he had 1-5 due to a misunderstanding. Which is actually somewhat fitting in that his score each week has been 1-5. Corrected overall records are reflected below.

TONY picked ORCAS, KNIGHTS, MARAUDERS, MARSHALLS, BUCKHEADS, TROJANS (1-5)
DEAN picked ORCAS, KNIGHTS, MARAUDERS, MARSHALLS, WOLVERINES, OSPREYS (1-5)
THOM picked ROBBERS, ORCAS, MARINERS, WOLVERINES, TROJANS, and PHANTOMS (3-3)

Cumulative Results: Thom is 9-9 (.500), Tony is 6-12 (.333), and Dean is 3-15 (.200)

My picks this week: Marshalls, Wolverines, Knights, Orcas, Phantoms, and in the Prosser High Rivalry, I have to go with the Mariners.

Remember, lineups are due Saturday Night at 9 p.m.

Week Four Schedule:

September 23 1997

Good Morning Franchise Owners,

Terrell Davis was the man of the hour, leading Tony's Knights to a victory over Bank's Robbers and his first divisional win. Tony's 168 points is the highest score so far this year. Other outstanding performances were had by Jeff George (47 points), Brett Favre (46 points), and Trent Dilfer (an amazing 37 points from the bench). Oh, and I Beat Brian.

To answer a question by Tony and Shawn, yes, my voice mail does have a timestamp, and I can replay it as many times as I like. So if you need to call to leave lineups, just read 'em off quick. I'll figure it out.

Final reminder, the Supplemental Draft is next weekend in Prosser. There are already some trades to tell you about - these will take effect at the draft. Also at the draft we will take a quick vote to alter the trade rules - next year trades will be legal beginning in week one!

This weeks Byes are Buffalo, Indianapolis, Miami, and New England.

Week Four Results:

Picks

TONY picked Buckheads, Marshalls, Mariners, Wolverines, Knights, and Orcas (4-2)
THOM picked Marshalls, Wolverines, Knights, Orcas, Phantoms, and Mariners (5-1).

Cumulative Results: Thom is 14-10 (.583), Tony is 10-14 (.417), and Dean is 3-15 (.200)

My picks this week: Phantoms, Wolverines, Marshalls, Orcas, Knights, and the Robbers (it's an odd week)

September 30 1997

Howdy Ho Franchise Owners,

In case you had your head under a rock, Tony Martin had one heck of a week, with 155 yards and three long touchdowns, to lead Dennis' Wolverines to dominance of Brent and Doug's Ospreys. This means that Dennis joins Tony and Thom in the 2-0 within their division club, and this also means that they draft last in the supplemental draft...

Speaking of the Supplemental Draft, it is located at the Grand Slam Pizza near beautiful Prosser Washington. Take highway 84 from either Yakima or the Tri Cities and then get off at exit 80. It is across the street from a MacDonalds. 12:00 pregame (food and trade talk), 1:00 kickoff (the main event). Call Dean or myself if you have any questions, and if you can't be there CALL YESTERDAY to have somebody draft for you.

There have been Few corrections in points given, and none that have changed the standings. Shawn noticed an inaccuracy in the Year Totaled stats for Defensive Teams, so look out for that one. The program is just adding three points here and there to Year Totalled Stats. Not a big deal, and I don't know any owners who pick their Defensive Teams based on Year Totalled Stats - they usually look at who their Defense is playing against. If you spot any other problems or need a score changed, be sure to let me know right away. No changes will be made after the next weeks lineups are due.

October 7 1997

Hooplah Franchise Owners,

If somebody offered a trade for your young quarterback, offering for example his second round draft pick and some guy named after a Lee Majors television character and kind of looks like Brian Buck, you'd make the trade, right? Well, I did. Before I learned that Kordell Stewart has managed to score more points this week than Heath Shuler has scored all year. Ah well, that's Football.

Very Important !!! This is probably your last newsletter before the stats are due for not only this weeks game (Saturday October 11th at 9 pm) but also for next weeks game, our first Thursday start. Lineups and picks will be due Thursday October 16th at 4:00 pm. To folks lucky enough to have WEB access, you can still connect to HTTP://WWW.BLARG.NET/~THOMCAT/SFFL.HTML and see the stats from Week Seven.

Not a good week for Mariners or for teams from Prosser. This was a very low scoring week, and the number one scoring team Thom's Phantoms just managed to nip over the triple digit mark at 101. In other news, the Supplemental Draft went well, and all the new players can be found behind the newest stat link, Weekly Player Scores Report. That also means that Waivers are now available. To refresh your memory, you pick a guy who just isn't performing for you (e.g. Christian Fauria) and notify the secretary that you cut him, and pick up somebody else (e.g. Andrew Glover). At the same time, make payment arrangements with Jeff Applegate, our Treasurer. Once the Secretary has verified that you have paid, and your newly acquired player has sat out his transfer week, you have a new member of your squad. Remember, waivers cost $2.00, and those of you receiving Newsletter Emails will probably have a free one.

Time for yet another new feature. I call it the Best and the Best Available. Point totals are based on total year performance so far, and are for the most part accurate. Some teams have had byes, some haven't, so weekly score is comparably accurate. Dennis is the winner so far with two players on the table. And just where is that Brett Favre, anyhow?

October 14 1997

Greetings Franchise Owners,

First of all, there was a slight mistake in last weeks scoring that hands the weekly scoring title to Banks' Robbers, instead of Thom's Phantoms. Didn't change the outcome of any games, just thought I'd mention it.

An incredible play by Brad Johnson, passing to himself, was not enought to salvage the win for Brian's Buckheads, who lost to Bank's Robbers this week. Dean's Orcas continued to score big, and in fact lead the overall scoring for the year. See Weekly Winners for a more complete report.

Very Important !!! This week has a Thursday Game, San Diego at Kansas City. Regardless of whether your team has anybody in this game you Must have your lineups and picks in by Thursday (October 16th) at 4:00 pm, or else we use last weeks lineups.

Time now for the Best and the Best Available. Point totals are based on total year performance so far, and are for the most part accurate. Some teams have had byes, some haven't, so weekly score is comparably accurate. Prosser is the big winner so far with all players on the table. Still looking for Brett Favre...

October 20 1997

Hallo Franchise Owners,

It was an incredibly low scoring week in the NFL, such that we managed the first shutout (25 points) in two years -- helping John's Trojans to their first win over Dean's Orcas. Of course, Napolean had his standard good week - second only to Barry Sanders on the Best and Best Available chart below.

A typing error was made last week, which brought up this reminder. I switched Tony's Knights and Bank's Robbers, but failed to switch their divisional records. I switched them because the program resolves ties with total points instead of divisional record. Since then I have switched them back - although in the League Summary Report they will be backwards. Remember, in SFFL we resolve ties with divisonal record first, total points scored second. The best team from each division, and two wildcards from each conference with the best record play for the first round. Teams that must improve to make the playoffs include the Trojans and Marauders, who both won this week. Congratulations.

I'd also like to take a moment and congratulate the owners for getting their lineups in on time. The next Thursday game is the week of Thanksgiving, Week 14, which is also the last week of our regular season. So you have some time...

Time now for the Best and the Best Available. Point totals are based on total year performance so far, and are for the most part accurate. Some teams have had byes, some haven't, so weekly score is comparably accurate. Prosser still continues to dominate this category.

October 28 1997

Good Afternoon Franchise Owners,

Terrell Davis took over the top spot among Running Backs this week, lending to the woes of Brent and Doug's Ospreys, who scored a record low nine points. But the story of the week in my opinion was former Husky Warren Moon, who managed the highest one week score ever with 409 yards (20 points) and 5 passing TDs (42 points). And yes, Tony, all your Defensive Teams except Tampa Bay managed a score this week.

A curious statistic, only Dennis, Mark, Shawn, and Brian actually managed to outscore their benches this week. Our bench high score was Jeff, with 144 points (that's gross). I only sat down and figured this out because I was so disgusted with my own bench.

In other news, the playoffs are shaping up, with just 7 teams over the .500 mark, and only the Spokane East division nearly sewn up by Dennis. Don't forget to check below in the "Best and Best Available" to pick up those one or two players who will take your team over the top! Remember, the waiver and trading deadline is Saturday November 8th at 9 pm. Week eleven is also the start of the final round of divisional play, to lock down those playoff berths and wildcard spots.

I would like to take a moment and "put out the call" for any information and/or old letters you may have regarding previous years in the SFFL. I am trying to put together a History web page, and would like to show the final standings and playoff results from each year, along with any other information you've got. The SFFL Superbowl winners I know (since I have the cup!), but everything else is fair game. Drop me a line...

Time now for the Best and the Best Available. Point totals are based on total year performance so far, and are for the most part accurate. Some teams have had byes, some haven't, so weekly score is comparably accurate. Congratulations to all for bumping the Prosser pileup, now the scoring leaders are fairly well distributed.

November 3 1997

Good Monday Franchise Owners,

Isaac Bruce and Tony Banks combined for 80 points, 652 yards, and led their respective teams (Brian's Buckheads and Mike's Marauders) to victory this week. And we managed our first tie since performance points were added. After all the dust settled and the scores were rechecked twice by me, Mark's Mariners and Shawn's Marshalls managed a tie. Of course, they both lead their divisions by half a game, so it might not matter in the end.

This was also the week of the injured quarterback, with five different QB's leaving games due to injury. Which leads me to my next point...

It's not too late to pick up somebody or make a last minute trade. Deadline is Saturday November 8th at 9 pm. Well, I'm gonna pick somebody up anyhow. See below for more details.

This was also the first week of the season that the winning team had less than 100 points. And also on the point front, with a halfway decent game this week, Dean's Orcas stand to break the 1000 point barrier.

Time for the final edition of Best and the Best Available. Point totals are based on total year performance so far, and are for the most part accurate. All teams have now had byes, so weekly score is comparably accurate.

Week Eleven 1997

November 10 1997

Salutations Franchise Owners,

This week not just Dean, but also Dennis and David broke the 1000 point mark (1040, 1106 and 1030 respectively). But the story of the week was Dennis' Defensive Team, Denver, who managed 67 points, a new scoring record. And to date, no team has had 1000 points scored against them, but most likely to go over this week are the two Smith teams, Dean's Orcas and Brent and Doug's Ospreys.

The final roster of acquisitions is listed below, and there are no more trades. Best of luck to all teams into the Superbowl. Highest scoring of all this weeks new acquisitions was Quarterback Rich Gannon, now of Dean's Orcas, and based on the last time I talked to Dean, "About Time."

The divisional races are shaping up nicely. Spokane West looks to send all three teams to the post season, with only Dennis qualifying from Spokane East. The Prosser race is very tight, with Dean only a game and a half back, and the At Large division boasts two of the seven win teams - surely one will win the division, the other the wildcard. And Brian's Buckheads are just a game behind Dean's Orcas.

And the spudbowl is shaping up nicely, currently John's Trojans against Brian's Buckheads. I don't think that qualifies for I Beat Brian though...

Now time for the Best in each category. There are big prizes to be won for the best performing player, so let's see who's ahead.

November 19 1997

Salutations Franchise Owners,

Well, the network troubles are hopefully over, and here is your newsletter, just 12 hours late. It was a week of close games in the NFL, with overtime victories and even a tie. No ties in our league, however. Dorsey Levens is our player of the week, with 43 points, more than half Brian's score but not enough to beat Shawn's Marshalls. Kinda like the Green Bay Packers. Also to be congratulated are Jeff's Wizards who are the point winners this week for the first time ever.

In the divisional matchups, there are just two undefeated teams, Tony's Knights and Thom's Phantoms, at 3-0. Both these teams are tested this week, playing their divisional rivals again for what might just determine who wins the ten spot and who gets the wildcard. Banks' Robbers have a slight edge in the points for race, and Shawn's Marshalls have a one-half game lead in the standings.

The other divisional matchups have Dennis' Wolverines clinching the Spokane East division title, and the Prosser division yet undecided. If Dean's Orcas manage to win the next two games and Jeff's Wizards lose the next two, we could have a three way tie in the Prosser division. Since there are two teams with eight wins in the At Large division, only two from the Prosser will be going to the playoffs. This is almost more confusing than the Rose Bowl situation...

The Spud Bowl situation not as confusing - Brian's Buckheads have clinched their spot in the potato game, and the other spot is a race between John's Trojans and the down-and-coming Brent and Doug's Ospreys.

Again it's time for the Best in each category. There are big prizes to be won for the best performing player, so let's see who's ahead.

November 24 1997

Greetings Franchise Owners,

This was a week where the closest game was a 27 point difference. Congratulations go out to our undefeated in conference teams, Tony's Knights & Thom's Phantoms, both 4-0. And congratulations also to next years draft choice Ryan Leaf and the Washington State Cougars, who are going to the Rose Bowl and taking Dean Smith with them!

OK, in this section, we examine the playoff picture. Hang on to your hats. In the Spokane Conference, the Wolverines, Knights, and Robbers are in. There is a tie between the Marauders and the Ospreys, and the Ospreys have the advantage with a better conference record. Essentially, the Ospreys would have to lose and the Marauders win for the Marauders to go. In the Other Conference, the Phantoms and Marshalls will both go. If the Wizards and the Mariners win (or if all three teams lose) they are both in no matter what. If the Wizards lose and the Mariners and Orcas win, the Mariners would go and the Orcas would go on strength of conference record (3-1). If the Mariners lose and the Orcas win, the Wizards and Orcas will go no matter what the Wizards do. Strength of schedule here favors the Wizards to go as Jeff plays his brother John. Whew.

And in other news, the Spud Bowl is all locked up. Congratulations (?) go to Brian's Buckheads and John's Trojans. You guys can send me your lineup for the week 17 game.

And speaking of lineups, this is a good week to remind people about our playoff rules (since eight of the twelve teams go anyhow). In the playoffs, we don't have ties or overtime, so here's what you need to do. Pick an additional three members of your team, any position, as Tie Breakers. Order is important! If the score of the game is tied, we compare the first tie breaking pair, then the second, then the third. If there is still a tie after that the rules don't cover it - so we go to the commissioner. So I hope you don't tie with Dean in the playoffs! Anyhow, best of luck to all involved.

Don't forget the Thursday game this week!

It's time for the penultimate Best in each category. There are big prizes to be won for the best performing player, so let's see who's ahead.

Congratulations Franchise Owners,

Congratulations are in order to the two-thirds of the franchise owners who made the playoffs.

In the recap of last years Superbowl, Bank's Robbers came out on top by a large margin. The Phantoms, with the loss, drop to the Wildcard spot in their division.

The Smith Household title was barely won by Dean's Orcas, but the Ospreys are consoled by their spot as a wildcard as well.

Our other divisional winners are Jeff's Wizards, Dennis' Wolverines, and Shawn's Marshalls.

Once again, congratulations to all, and if you see a scoring problem (I've rechecked the scores once) LET ME KNOW! If not, don't forget that you need to send me some additional information - namely, your three Tie Breakers in order. Any team that doesn't send these in will automatically lose all ties, so do it!

December 9, 1997

Good Afternoon, Franchise Owners,

This week all the wildcards were eliminated in the first round of the SFFL playoffs. The star athlete was Corey Dillon who broke Jim Brown's rookie record with an outstanding performance, leading Jeff's Wizards over the wildcard Marshalls. And in another story, the Robbers won't be going back to the superbowl. The rest of the scores are:
Tony's Knights over Brent/Doug's Ospreys 95-72
Dennis' Wolverines over Bank's Robbers 128-90
Thom's Phantoms over Dean's Orcas 97-86
Jeff's Wizards over Shawn's Marshalls 91-48

Now a note regarding scheduling. In the past we have had BYEs, which pretty much nobody liked. This year, I tried to feature some good matchups and a blockbuster final week (eg. Smith vs. Smith; Applegate vs. Applegate; and a rematch of last years Superbowl Phantoms vs. Panther/Robbers) to keep things interesting. Since the schedule has to be approved by the executive committee before next years draft, this is your chance to provide some input.

Your input and answers are important to the success of the league. Lastly, please make a committment to rejoin the league by June 1, so we can begin recruiting new members if necessary. Thank you.

Now on to a preview of our playoff teams.

Second Round of the Playoff Schedule:

Dennis' Wolverines vs. Tony's Knights
Jeff's Wizards vs. Thom's Phantoms

December 16, 1997

Greetings Franchise Owners

Well we're back to the superbowl again. Here are the scores for this weeks games. A great effort by all four teams, but only two could be the big winners. The scores are:
Tony's Knights over Dennis' Wolverines 104-58
Thom's Phantoms over Jeff's Wizards 120-78

This sets up the predicted superbowl that Bank's Panthers upended last year. Recently, the Phantoms have enjoyed the upper hand in this matchup, most recently beating the Knights this year 83-49. It helped that Brett Favre wasn't playing for that game, and it is rumoured that he won't be playing for this one either. Of course, that would probably remove Antonio Freeman from contention as well. Check back here for more details as the week progresses.

Don't forget about the Superbowl this year (January 25th). It will be held in Spokane, and rumour has it at David and Brenda's house. These rumours will be confirmed and you will receive mail from your humble secretary. At the superbowl party we get league purchased beer and snacks and prizes are handed out. As an owner who has missed all but one, I can vouch for the fact that you win more prizes by attending then missing. So figure out your schedule and BE THERE!

Lastly, I am still waiting to hear from all of you about the things you liked and didn't like about this season. And I don't mean not liking the fact that your team isn't in the superbowl.

Now on to a preview of our superbowl teams.

Well, I'll see you guys at the Superbowl Party, right? There are
plenty of other prizes to be won, and the first ever post-season
Survey, prepared by none-other than your very own secretary, me!

                --Thom

PS The spud bowl is too close to call - I guess you just have to wait
until the superbowl party to find out who wins (?) that title.
