Week One 2001

Welcome back to the increasingly chaotic SFFL. Entropy is ever increasing and the Mariners are ever winning - could they go undefeated in this topsy-turvy league? On to the News!

Edgerrin James, the second best running back this week, led Mark's Mariners on a successful defense of their superbowl cup. The Mariners' owner was tight-lipped about his decision to stay in the league one more year.

In a very tight race, Dean's Orcas slipped past the Warlocks. Phone calls to their front office from Ryan Leaf were ignored by the Orcas ownership this week.

Rod Smith gave the game to Bill's Hornets in Monday Night action in week one. Unfortunately, Ed McCaffrey (also shown here) was also lost for the season in that contest, at last report.

Dennis, a non-competitor in the I Beat Brian pool, managed to do just that this week with a good performance from WR Jimmy Smith.

Marc managed to submit an illegal lineup and still score over 100 points this week, thanks to Rich Gannon. The Secret Agent Men submitted two Quarterbacks (probably on accident) so I treated it appropriately under the rules. Be sure you double check your lineup - I am rule bound to use as much of what you send as I can.

Newcomer Rich's Ironmen also topped the century mark this week, defeating the secretary's hapless Phantoms. I've added a temporary logo for the Ironmen - I hope to have their helmets done next week.

Schedule Update

The NFL Schedule matches the previous "week 3" schedule, but for us (and many other fantasy leagues) it is still "week 2". I've updated some of the pages (including this one) but I have a few more to do.

Picks

Hey guys, now that the season is really going it's time to start up the Fantasy Picks! Basically just take a look at the matchups listed below and then tell me who you think is going to win. I'll keep track of your percentage of correct picks, and at the end of the season the highest percentage wins. There is also a minimum number of games "picked", so Mark Skeen can't win by picking just himself to win every week! My picks are usually highlighed under the . . .

Game of the Week

Rich and Dennis were both big winners in week one, and I think that their game will be one to watch this week. It's a tough call, but I think the Wolverines experience in the league will carry them to the victory. I think the other big winners in our week 2 will be Shawn, Brent & Doug, Mark, Marc. I also think my Phantoms can even their keel with a win over the Hornets.

Mark's Mariners 87 Doug & Brent's Ospreys 74
Bill's Hornets 88 Jeff's Wizards 82
Dean's Orcas 62 Tony's Warlocks 60
Marc's Secret Agent Men 115 Shawn's Lone Gunmen 74
Rich's Ironmen 102 Thom's Phantoms 50
Dennis' Wolverines 92 Brian's Buckheads 61

Next Week's Fantasy Schedule
Shawn's Lone Gunmen at Dean's Orcas
Tony's Warlocks at Doug & Brent's Ospreys
Bill's Hornets at Thom's Phantoms
Marc's Secret Agent Men at Jeff's Wizards
Mark's Mariners at Brian's Buckheads
Dennis' Wolverines at Rich's Ironmen

Week Two 2001

Quick update, and a bit late, this week.

Peyton Manning managed to outscore the Phantom's entire starting lineup, even though he was on the bench. Bill's Hornets extremely confident coach managed a win anyways with Kerry Collins and company.

Rich's Ironmen stomped the Wolverines in our game of the week, and the rookie is now two and oh.

Jeff's Wizards managed a solid win this week, despite leaving the all-star Green Bay Defense on the bench.

Other wins this week include the Mariners over the Buckheads, the Warlocks over the Ospreys, and the Lone Gunmen over the Orcas.

Picks

I'll hop out the results of the picks next week - don't forget to submit them with your lineup each week!

Game of the Week

Rookie juggernaut Rich's Ironmen goes head to head against the undefeated Bill's Hornets in the premier matchup this week. I'll give the Ironmen the slight edge in this contest.
My other picks will be the Wolverines, Secret Agent Men, Mariners, Phantoms, and everybody can beat the Buckheads so why not the Lone Gunmen?

Shawn's Lone Gunmen 81 Dean's Orcas 59
Tony's Warlocks 65 Doug & Brent's Ospreys 50
Bill's Hornets 79 Thom's Phantoms 54
Jeff's Wizards 75 Marc's Secret Agent Men 47

Marc's Secret Agent Men at Brian's Buckheads
Mark's Mariners at Rich's Ironmen
Dennis' Wolverines at Jeff's Wizards

Week Four 2001

I've got a complete list of waivers, but first how did they score in week four?

Terrel Owens and Jeff Garcia helped carry Doug & Brent's Ospreys over the Lone Gunmen this week. Good performances were also had by Ricky Williams and Todd Pinkston. The Ospreys topped the century mark for the second week in a row, and are number two on the overall scoring list.

It's funny - several people started players from Indianapolis, despite the bye week. There was also some confusion about the Raiders-Cowboys game, which was previously a bye week. Be sure to check the schedule!

Even though he couldn't start Jerry Rice, Tony's Warlocks beat the hapless Phantoms this week, to take sole possession of first place in the Grey Beard division. That's the Warlocks third win in a row. Bill's Hornets also won this week, to pull even with the Lone Gunmen with a .500 record.

John Carney scored an amazing 25 points vs Minnesota this week, leading Jeff's Wizards to the victory. Donovan McNabb also added to the score, and the Wizards are now tied for first in their division with Rich's Ironmen, whose unbeaten streak came to an end this week.

Also winning this week were Marc's Secret Agent Men and Mark's Mariners. These two teams are vying for the lead of the Young Turks division, and leaving poor Dennis in the dust.

Acquisitions

Here's the summary. The CBS Sportsline site is updated. (Man, what a pain it is to do anything there) If you don't see your name here, or if you've picked less than four (Dennis & Brian), then you've still got some free picks coming.

Game of the Week

This ones a pretty big matchup - the number two scoring team versus the number three. I'm going to pick the underdog Secret Agent Men to win this contest - and not just so I can wave my nationalist flag. I'll also pick Shawn over Dennis, Jeff over Bill, Rich over Dean, Thom over Mark, and the entire league (including Tony) over Brian.

I'll update the rest of the picks next week and get us all caught up. I think Tony's one of three people in the "I beat Brian" pool, so I might get to award a prize next week also.

Late Breaking Update - Hey, we're semi-officially getting together for a football game on October 28th, when the Miami Dolphins come to rainy Seattle. RSVP immediately if you are interested - we probably won't buy football tickets in advance but I am hoping to get some hockey tickets for Saturday night.

Doug & Brent's Ospreys 126 Shawn's Lone Gunmen 92
Tony's Warlocks 84 Thom's Phantoms 60
Bill's Hornets 89 Dean's Orcas 71
Marc's Secret Agent Men 80 Brian's Buckheads 26
Mark's Mariners 110 Rich's Ironmen 53
Jeff's Wizards 84 Dennis' Wolverines 70

Next Week's Fantasy Schedule
Shawn's Lone Gunmen at Dennis' Wolverines
Tony's Warlocks at Brian's Buckheads
Bill's Hornets at Jeff's Wizards
Dean's Orcas at Rich's Ironmen
Doug & Brent's Ospreys at Marc's Secret Agent Men
Thom's Phantoms at Mark's Mariners

Week Five 2001

Hey, as far as I can see, the story of the week is Brian's Buckheads who used QB Chris Chandler and Warrick Dunn to pound Tony's Warlocks this week. The Warlocks got good scoring from Brett Favre so this didn't look totally one-sided.

Thom's Phantoms managed to top the century mark also this week, beating the perrenial powerhouse Mark's Mariners. Only a swap of kickers would have managed more points. Shaun Alexander continues to perform for a team that originally picked him up for "trade bait".

The third team to crack triple digits this week proved me quite wrong in the Game of the Week as Jeff Garcia led Brent & Doug's Ospreys to a smashing victory over the Secret Agent Men. The Ospreys beat the hapless SAMs by One Hundred and Five points, a SFFL record. The Ospreys also have the most "Points For" in the league, 52 more than their nearest competition, the Mariners.

Dennis' Wolverines topped the Lone Gunmen this week, proving they are not counted out of the Young Turks division yet. Jeff's Wizards worked their magic over Bill's Hornets, in an attempt to keep up with the dominating Rich's Ironmen, who topped the hapless (and Moss-less) Orcas this week.

Acquisitions

See Week four for the big list of acquisitions, and here's the week five update.

Game of the Week

Divisional Matchups start this week, and none looks better than Mark vs Marc. I think the "k" man will reign triumphant, and that has little to do with Marc's team letting me down last week . . .
My other divisional picks include the Ospreys over the Orcas, the Lone Gunmen RBs to upset the RBless Warlocks, and I think the Wizards should squeak past the Buckheads.
In non-divisional action I'll pick the Hornets and (with barely a prayer) my own Phantoms. Who knew the Ironmen would be such a strong rookie team?

My own picks record is atrocious, so I'll delay the catch up for one more week. "History will erase the mistakes of the past" and all that.

Late Breaking Update - This is Absolutely, Positively your last chance to respond if you'd like to attend the football game on October 28th, when the Miami Dolphins come to rainy Seattle. I've managed to snag free hockey tickets for the night before, and it looks like I might even get two free Seahawk tickets for the game.
RSVP with your lineups or forever rue the day.

Dennis' Wolverines 84 Shawn's Lone Gunmen 76
Brian's Buckheads 120 Tony's Warlocks 60
Jeff's Wizards 75 Bill's Hornets 67
Rich's Ironmen 96 Dean's Orcas 59
Doug & Brent's Ospreys 168 Marc's Secret Agent Men 63
Thom's Phantoms 107 Mark's Mariners 90

Next Week's Fantasy Schedule
Doug & Brent's Ospreys at Dean's Orcas
Marc's Secret Agent Men at Mark's Mariners
Tony's Warlocks at Shawn's Lone Gunmen
Brian's Buckheads at Jeff's Wizards
Bill's Hornets at Dennis' Wolverines
Thom's Phantoms at Rich's Ironmen

Week Six 2001

Jerome Bettis led the scoring this week, helping Thom's Phantoms score a victory over the rookie Ironmen. The Bus rushed for 143 yards and generally looked pretty good for an old guy.

In the other Venerable division news, Brent & Doug's Ospreys trounced the hapless Orcas. The Ospreys surprised everyone this week by continuing their reign atop the "Most Points Scored" column.

I'll go on record as calling the Game of the Week, with Mark's Mariners pushing past the slumping Secret Agent Men. The Mariners aren't quite where I predicted they'd be, with only the second most points scored, but overall are having a fine season.

Tony's Warlocks took their turn stepping on the hapless Lone Gunmen to keep pace with Bill's Hornets, who wone their non-divisional contest against the Wolverines. Dennis started almost a whole team of guys on a BYE week, but this has been a screwy year in the NFL.

Screwy describes our last divisional win, as Brian's Buckheads continue their resurgence. The losing Wizards coach was busy scanning the schedule for the next time he gets to play the Orcas.

Acquisitions

See previous weeks for other acquisitions, and here's the most recent update.

Game of the Week

Divisional Matchups continue this week, but I've got to go with a non-divisional contest. Tony's Warlocks are doing surprisingly well with no running backs, but I think they'll fall this week to Mark's Mariners.
My divisional picks include the Hornets, the Phantoms, the Secret Agent Men and the Ironmen.
In the other non-divisional game I'll be rooting for the Ospreys to make mincemeat out of those resurgent Buckheads.

Doug & Brent's Ospreys 54 Dean's Orcas 50
Mark's Mariners 87 Marc's Secret Agent Men 54
Tony's Warlocks 63 Shawn's Lone Gunmen 45
Brian's Buckheads 78 Jeff's Wizards 38
Bill's Hornets 100 Dennis' Wolverines 30
Thom's Phantoms 91 Rich's Ironmen 47

Next Week's Fantasy Schedule
Shawn's Lone Gunmen at Bill's Hornets
Dean's Orcas at Thom's Phantoms
Dennis' Wolverines at Marc's Secret Agent Men
Rich's Ironmen at Jeff's Wizards
Mark's Mariners at Tony's Warlocks
Brian's Buckheads at Doug & Brent's Ospreys

Week Seven 2001

This is the first post-seahawk game SFFL report we've had since 1998. The local team performed pretty much as expected, however.

Darrell Jackson performed well, but Mark's Mariners still beat the Terrel-less Warlocks. At least Tony was there to see the Game of the Week.

The Warlocks did manage to keep pace with their division as Bill's Hornets fell to Shawn's Lone Gunmen in a close match. Isaac Bruce gave the old-guy performance-of-the-game in this contest.

Another seahawk attendee won his game this week. Brian's Buckheads slipped past the resurgent Ospreys for another close victory. If the Ospreys' James McKnight didn't fumble the ball (see above) they may have won this contest.

I think it's safe to point out that the Buckheads didn't have any Seahawks on their starting roster.

In the "screwy play" department, Rich's Ironmen slipped past the Wizards in a four-point game. If the Wizards had started a QB, they could have won this contest easily. Miami's Jay Fiedler was sitting on their bench - he managed to nab 20 points against Seattle in the SFFL game.

In a similar story, Lamar Smith helped Dennis' Wolverines beat the Secret Agent Men. The flag-wavers have four QBs, but none of them are rising to the occasion. Matt Hasselbeck put in a surprising good performance while relegated to the Wolverine bench.

Finally, in the "blowout" department, Thom's Phantoms trounced the non-seahawk attending Orcas by a two-to-one margin. QB Aaron Brooks and the Denver Defense could have put the Orcas away by themselves - the eligibles were just icing on the cake. Old-guy Jerome Bettis provided another stellar performance.

Acquisitions

See previous weeks for other acquisitions, and here's the most recent update.

Game of the Week

We take a week off from divisional matchups AND Thursday games this week. I think the 4-3 Ospreys are solid this year, but I'll pick the triple-digit 4-3 Hornets to win this contest.
The Wolverines, Mariners, Ironmen, and Warlocks should also win this week. It's a hard call, but I also hope my Phantoms can take the pressure and beat their former divisional rivals this week.

Shawn's Lone Gunmen 120 Bill's Hornets 114
Thom's Phantoms 116 Dean's Orcas 58
Dennis' Wolverines 96 Marc's Secret Agent Men 83
Rich's Ironmen 82 Jeff's Wizards 78

Week Ten 2001

Quick update, and don't forget about the
Thursday Game This Week !

All previous weeks have been updated. I can only quote B.B.King:

The thrill is gone, the thrill is gone away
The thrill is gone baby, the thrill is gone away
You know you done me wrong baby, but you will be sorry someday.

I'll try to keep on top of this for the rest of the season, but let's see if we can make this a better, happier league for all next year, hmmm?

Acquisitions

See previous weeks for other acquisitions, and here's the most recent update.

Game of the Week

The Hornets and the Mariners are quietly putting together quite a season, with but seven losses between them. The Hornets have scored the second most "points for" in the league, though - I'll give them the nod for this week.
As far as the "picks" go, Tony has been picking along at a fine average (some would say an improvement over previous years), but I've been publishing the page too sporadically to get a good distribution.

Mark's Mariners 109 Dennis' Wolverines 68
Bill's Hornets 91 Tony's Warlocks 86

Thom's Phantoms at Marc's Secret Agent Men

Week Thirteen 2001

Hey, nobody cracked the century mark this week.

Tony 71, Bill 68
Mark 77, Dennis 47
Doug & Brent 83, Dean 76
Jeff 89, Brian 62
Shawn 74, Rich 72
Marc 89, Thom 80

The playoff standings, Junior conference

Mark 8-5 (4-0) *
Marc 8-5 (1-3)
Jeff 7-6 (2-2) *
Brian 6-7 (3-1)
Rich 5-8 (1-3) [928]
Dennis 5-8 (1-3) [870]
* = currently leading division

Rich and Dennis are out of the playoffs no matter what (Brian's better divisional record does the trick). The Buckheads can win their division if they beat the Orcas and Jeff loses to the Ospreys this week.

Mark just needs to win to clinch the division, but if he loses to the Lone Gunmen and the Secret Agent Men top the Hornets, they can win with a coup.

The playoff standings, Senior conference

Thom 9-4 (4-0) *
Bill 8-5 (2-2) *
D & B 7-6 (2-2) [1189]
Tony 7-6 (2-2) [957]
Shawn 5-8 (2-2)
Dean 3-10 (0-4)
* = currently leading division

Shawn and Dean are also out of the playoffs no matter what. The only way the Warlocks can spirit the top spot away from the Hornets is to win AND score 187 points MORE than Bill does.

In other words, the only thing undecided is whether the Phantoms face the Ospreys or Warlocks in the first round of the playoffs.

Tony's Warlocks 71 Bill's Hornets 68
Mark's Mariners 77 Dennis' Wolverines 47
Doug & Brent's Ospreys 83 Dean's Orcas 76
Jeff's Wizards 89 Brian's Buckheads 62
Shawn's Lone Gunmen 74 Rich's Ironmen 72
Marc's Secret Agent Men 89 Thom's Phantoms 80

Next Week's Fantasy Schedule
Shawn's Lone Gunmen at Mark's Mariners
Tony's Warlocks at Rich's Ironmen
Bill's Hornets at Marc's Secret Agent Men
Dean's Orcas at Brian's Buckheads
Doug & Brent's Ospreys at Jeff's Wizards
Thom's Phantoms at Dennis' Wolverines

Week Fourteen 2001

Welcome to the post-season,

I've just returned from my mini-vacation in San Diego, and I was surprised to see that the Orcas beat the Buckheads. A preview of the upcoming spud-bowl? Could be...

Phantoms 86, Wolverines 43.

Remember, for the playoffs you can submit up to three "backup" players as "tie-breakers". This can only be done on the normal website, so go there for your lineups after checking injuries on Sportsline.

Week Fifteen 2001

The web page will be updated tonight by Wednesday, shortly after another project I have to finish (Bolt!)

All scores officially verified, barring a recount in Florida. No rematch of the first Superbowl, and defending champ Mark is out in the first round.

Thom 118, Doug & Brent 49
Bill 66, Tony 65
Brian 119, Mark 96
Marc 87, Jeff 78

Seattle teams have the home-field advantage, and we'll gladly host the Superbowl party (it won't be at my house, but there are some nice restOOraunts around...)

The rest of this message will look a lot better in a non-proportional font (like Courier). At the VERY bottom is a man-by-man scoring summary of Tony's game.

It's not over yet, but the Secret Agent Men don't have any timeouts left.

Final results (including the spud bowl!) tomorrow, along with a survey.

Survey question: CBS Sportsline was bad, but did it have any redeeming features? (I'm making a shopping list for next year and checking it twice)

I have a quick announcement first - due to the elimination of any sort of postal fees, there is extra money in the secretarial pool. We will do a financial restructuring in the off-season, but that still leaves us with money left over this year. So...

Announcing, a $5 refund for all paying owners!

The SFFL will pay back $5 for each paying owner. You can think of this as a special 10th anniversary prize if you like. Eh, go on, spend it, you've earned it!

OK, the SFFL SUPERBOWL winner is: Bill's Hornets

Brookins just didn't put up the kind of numbers for Marc's Secret Agent Men to win this, but at least he was there.

Superbowl Party - the current plan is to have a superbowl party here in Seattle on Sunday, February 3. Train, bus, plain, or automobile are all options, so get your tickets now. All SFFL 2002 prizes will be awarded at this venue, and some business will probably be discussed pre-game.

The SPUDBOWL champ was none other than: Tony's Warlocks

With 130 points, he was (beer) head and shoulders over the competition. Defending superbowl champ Mark's Mariners managed the lowest spudbowl score, a mere 45. The other competitors, in no particular order, were:

Ospreys 101 Wizards 55 Mariners 45 Lone Gunmen 61 Wolverines 76 Orcas 55 Buckheads 56 Phantoms 108 Ironmen 68

Thanks for a great year, fellas.
