Week One 2002

Welcome to the newly revised SFFL. What I like to call Back to Basics

Further below you'll find a summary of the tabs above. I won't include this in future releases of the page, but you can always get back to week 1. (Which I'm sure certain teams in the NFL wish they could do too...)

This is the spot where I usually talk about great performances -- but this week they were mostly on the bench. Brent and Doug's Ospreys, for example, scored more than twice as many points on the bench as on the field. Or I could talk about how my Phantoms won the superbowl rematch against the Hornets.

But this week, I'm not going to talk about those. I'm going to cover the League itself. Ask yourself these questions:

The SFFL was always about friends -- talking (or arguing) and enjoying each other's company first. The fact that it was also football was really just the icing on the cake.

Take a moment and send a message to the league mailing list. Think about why you are here. Do it today !

The main tabs will take you to four different statistical breakdowns. They are: Just below the tabs are the weeks -- obviously week one is the only valid one so far.

Near the bottom of the page are the helmets, which are your link to each individual team. (still tracking down helmets for the new guys) Each individual page will have scoring, schedule, history, and the latest game information. If you want a quick bookmark to your information, this is the page for you.

Week Two 2002

Week 2 of the SFFL has come to a close, and some upsets to be sure.

Rookie Scott's Plungers managed a win despite benching the hot receiver Peerless Price. The owner could not be reached for comment, since he has no email address yet. (Please take care of that, Tony also!) Speaking of Tony, his Warlocks were on the losing end of that loss, despite a decent performance from QB Brett Favre.

QB Drew Bledsoe had a heck of a week, and because of that Marc's Secret Agent Men put the stomp on Rich's Ironmen. If the Ironmen had played their Carolina Defense, it might have been a bit closer, but the Secret Agent Men had it all in hand.

There's a fair amount of parity in the league, since only the Plungers and the Secret Agent Men are undefeated. On the other side of the fence, the 2000 Superbowl champion Lone Gunmen and the 2001 Superbowl champion Hornets are both winless. What a league! (You know, the Rammies are also 0-2, so at least it's good company)

This week marks the return of the Secretary's Picks. That's right, I challenge all of you to predict the games better than I can. We'll award a prize to the highest percentage at the end of the season -- the only requirement is that you make picks for at least 90% of the games that I make picks for. Simple, eh?

This weeks Premier Matchup will be between the Plungers and the Secret Agent Men, both 2-0. I'm going out on a very stout limb and predicting a victory for the rookie Plungers. Other winners this week should include the Wolverines, Buckheads, Warlocks, and my own Phantoms.

You'll find your own "picks" ballot on your team page -- so make your picks and submit them with your lineups for week 3. Good luck!

Week Three 2002

These are the stats for Week 3 - but first an announcement!

The Supplemental Draft is coming soon -- but when? I don't know, but you can bombard our Commissioner and maybe we'll all find out together.

Say, while you are at it, send a message to our own league mailing list! (ok, rant mode off. On to the stats, and much commentary by Brian Buck!)

In the battle of the undefeated, only one team can come out unscathed. The other joins the ranks of the also-rans -- watching, and waiting, to see how long an unbeaten team can stay that way. In a year when the Chargers, Saints and Panthers top the NFL at 3-0, it's only fitting that a rookie team stands atop the SFFL.

Scott's Plungers unplugged Marc's Secret Agent Men thanks to a stellar performance by Donovan McNabb in a 44-13 shellacking of the Cowboys. With the loss of star running back Ahman Green to injury, the Secret Agent Men could do nothing but watch as their hopes for a perfect season went down the toilet in a 102-76 loss to the Plungers.

As go the undefeated, ergo the win-less. Lamar Smith lead the Carolina Panthers to a 3-0 record, helping Bill's Hornets gain their first victory of the season over Shawn's Lone Gunmen in a 115-46 route that left the Lone Gunmen's winless streak intact.

In other action:

The "Week of the Rookies" continues as Dennis' Wolverines stick with a Dallas Cowboy-free lineup, which proves to be their downfall. The Wolverines miss out on a 12-point performance by the Dallas DT and watch Lynn and Kila's Drifters eke out a 4-point victory, 80-76.

Well I did pretty bad in the picks this week, so let's go right to next week's action. Still plenty of time for you to submit picks for this season.

I see two Premier Matchups this week as the Phantoms and Drifters battle for the top spot in the Valley division and the Buckheads and Warlocks battle for the top spot in the Highlander division. I'm going to pick the Phantoms and Buckheads to win these contests. Other winners will most likely include the Hornets and Secret Agent Men. I'll also predict that the Lone Gunmen get their first win this week, and the Plungers get their first loss.

You'll find your own "picks" ballot on your team page -- so make your picks and submit them with your lineups for week 4. Good luck!

Week Four 2002

Thom's Notes

Supplemental Draft! That's right, you heard it here first. With very little consensus and no commissioner approval, the Supplement Draft has been set for this Saturday. Complain in the next 24 hours and we might change it.

I could say it will be in Seattle but who am I kidding - only Marc and I would attend. The Supplemental Draft will be held online using MSN messenger, just like we did the real draft.

The draft will be four rounds, and here's the order:

1-3 record - Shawn, Dennis, Bill
2-2 record - Dean, Tony, Rich, Marc, Lynn & Kila, Brent & Doug
3-1 record - Scott, Thom, Brian

Finally, if anybody has a real interest in seeing a game here at the new Seahawks Stadium, let me know. I'd like to get a gang of friends together . . .

Brian's Notes

With week 4 came some breakout performances by some of the league's top player -- and top underperformers.

In the Games of the Week, Thom's predictions come true with both the Buckheads and Phantoms soundly defeating their opponents. Thom's Phantoms rode the wave of Shaun Alexander's NFL record 5-touchdown performance in the first half of Sunday night's game. The Phantoms improve to 3-1 with a season-high 171 points over the Drifters' more-than-respectable 107.

LaDainian Tomlinson and Rich Gannon turned it up a notch to provide Brian's Buckheads with 41 and 45 points respectively. The Buckheads improve to 3-1 and put another "I Beat Brian" contender into an early grave, beating Tony's Warlocks 145-73.

In other action:

Trent Green, perennial underperformer, scored 50 points for Brent and Doug's Ospreys. Green threw three touchdowns to TE Tony Gonzalez, who happened to be starting for Bill's Hornets. Gonzalez scored 44, virtually erasing Green's performance. But the Ospreys hold on, beating the Hornets 112-103.

The SFFL no longer has an unbeaten team thanks to lackluster outings by Corey Dillon and Kevin Johnson. Undefeated Scott's Plungers were stopped up by Rich's Ironmen 87-68 after Brian Griese's canine-inflicted ankle sprain heals in time for Denver's Monday-night game versus the previously hapless Baltimore Ravens. Griese scored zip until the second half, giving the Plungers reason to hope. But a scoring binge by the Ravens in the first half forced the Broncos to pass on nearly every down and scramble for every score they could get.

Also, Shawn's Lone Gunmen snag their first victory of the season over Dennis' Wolverines, who elected this week to start Dallas' defense. Adding the Dallas Karma to his lineup didn't help as the Wolverines drop the game 63-56.

Did the Orcas play this week?

I Beat Brian

or perhaps

Game of the Week

Even though they played in separate games of the week in Week 4, this week's game has to be Thom's Phantoms at Brian's Buckheads. This game pits the league's highest scoring teams in a battle to see who's tops in the SFFL. Brian's going out on a limb to predict that losing Shaun Alexander to a bye will be the difference. The Phantoms won't have the offensive oomph to top the Buckheads.

Thom, fresh from not posting or setting up the picks for two weeks in a row, will pick himself to win this contest and the coveted "I Beat Brian" pot. I think the Hornets will rebound, the Ironmen will dominate, the Plungers will do well also. Finally, I think the Warlocks stand a decent chance against the Secret Agent Men.

In other news, the Warlocks did lose to Brian, so here's his trophy:

Phanthoms 171 Drifters 107
Ironmen 87 Plungers 68
Ospreys 112 Hornets 103
Buckheads 145 Warlocks 78
Lone Gunmen 63 Wolverines 56

Week Five 2002

The Supplemental Draft is done. Teams who didn't draft and are reading this (and somehow missed the many earlier emails, etc.) are urged to make their choices in the next few days.

Players drafted before the lineup deadline (Sunday 9 am PST) can be played this week, while other players must wait until next weeks game.

Early next week the Waiver Wire opens for the first time this season! Just a refresher from the Rules for you --

  • The waiver wire opens at 6 pm PST each Tuesday.
  • The waiver wire closes for the week one hour before the lineup deadline.
  • Teams may make one waiver per week.
  • To make a waiver, a team must cut a player (who is available immediately) then pick up a player (who may start immediately).
Good luck!

Game Notes

Monday night can make a difference!

What a Game of the Week we had this week. The Buckheads were up, though victory was hardly assured. It would take a good performance from Marty Booker to ensure Thom's victory -- and that's what happened! 141 yards and a touchdown combined to 20 points, putting Thom's Phantoms just one point ahead of the Buckheads.

I Beat Brian!

The Buckheads had a pretty good performance of their own in Rich Gannon, who in turn passed many times to receiver Charlie Garner. The Oakland Running Back managed 177 combined yards and two touchdowns, pushing Scott's Plungers to a 4-1 record over the high scoring Ospreys.

In other action:

Rich's Ironmen pushed past our league's equivalent of the Rams, punishing the Lone Gunmen 93-82. The Secret Agent Men were all over the Warlocks, dragging Tony's record below .500 (and coincidentally pushing his supplemental draft pick up). In a family feud, Lynn and Kila's Drifters got past the Orcas of Dean. And finally Dennis' Wolverines doubled their wins over the hapless Hornets.

Game of the Week

Two rookies vie for dominance as the Plungers and the Drifters meet for week six action. The long-promised new helmets are soon to appear, and I'll have to pick the Plungers to win this contest. I think the Secret Agent Men will win this week, and I predict the Lone Gunmen to rebound over the Orcas. The Buckheads should have no problems with the Ospreys, and the Hornets should double their wins this week by beating the Warlocks.

If I can find a decent picture of a Buckhead, I'll post it here as my trophy. Since I Beat Brian after all.

Week Six 2002

Game Notes

Everybody takes turns beating the Lone Gunmen, and now Dean's Orcas do the same. It's true, I picked them to lose, but I didn't count on the Bus revving up it's old engine. Truth be told, Dean got good numbers from Eddie George and kicker Joe Nedney to improve his season to the .500 mark.

Speaking of old school, Brian's Buckheads and Dennis' Wolverines had no problem getting past their opponents, scoring in the triple digits. Thom's Phantoms also put together a win.

Tony's Warlocks also improve to 3-3, also beating the formerly dominant Hornets. Alstott's performance was only part of the picture - Brett Favre also started to produce again.

Finally, in the battle of the newcomers, Scott's Plungers continue their dominance of the league with a win over the Drifters.

Game of the Week

Well I blew most of the picks from last week, so let me try again. In a week of non-divisional play, the match to watch will be the Buckheads (4-2) against the Wolverines (3-3).

As far as the winner, I'll pick the Wolverines on strength of schedule. Sticking with the numbers, the Plungers, Ironmen, Secret Agent Men, and Phantoms should win this week. The tough battle will be between the Drifters and the Warlocks, with a slight edge to the Drifters.

Waiver Wire

The waiver wire is open -- has been since Tuesday night. Nothing to report yet, although Rich did finish off his Supplemental picks, acquiring a couple of Seahawks. Reminder: Each team gets one free waiver. The waiver wire for this week closes one hour before gametime on Sunday (noon eastern time).

Week Seven 2002

Game Notes

Week 7 - Should have, could have, would have - but some couldn't have.

SFFL Week 7 saw some amazing scores - both high and low. With different personnel, outcomes would have changed, season records could have been broken, and some teams just didn't start players they should have.

Amazingly, Dean's Orcas are just one game behind the Buckheads in the Park Conference. The Bucs have scored a league-high 817 points while the Orcas have scored only 428 points. That's a 389-point difference! Look for the Bucs to lap the Orcas in the next few weeks.

In the game of the week, Brian's Buckheads win another high-scoring matchup. They ride the Faulk-Gannon-Tomlinson wave to best Dennis' Wolverines 151-95. Had the Buckheads started the right personnel, they could have scored 175 points and eclipsed the season-high score of 171 set by Thom's Phantoms.

Priest Holmes might be the top-scoring running back so far, but he's not gonna win games by himself. Should the Ospreys have changed their personnel? Had they done so, they could have scored 126 points. Instead, they lose to Rich's Ironmen 86-39. Brian Griese put in a heck of a performance.

Dean's Orcas couldn't have started a quarterback that would score - Kurt Warner and Jim Miller were out and Tom Brady had a bye. Even worse, The Orcas faced the tops in the SFFL - Scott's Plungers. But the Plungers suffered from single-digit scoring by key players and Dean's Orcas pull one out 59-39. Even with their bench, The Plungers couldn't have won the game. Editor's Note - Dean, make a waiver, would ya?

The Plungers tie with the Ospreys for the third-lowest score of the year.

In other action, Tony's Warlocks lose Brett Favre before he could have scored. The Warlocks couldn't have beaten Lynn and Kila's Drifters even if they had started different personnel. The Drifters win 90-55.

And finally, Shawn's Lone Gunmen improve to 2-5 with a 98-79 victory over Marc's Secret Agent Men while Thom's Phantoms best Bill's Hornets 112 to 70.

Week Eight 2002

Editor's Note Cheese, I didn't realize this didn't get posted until now. Happy Halloween all, and good luck this week. Here's Brian's writeup:

SFFL Week 8

We enter the second half of the SFFL regular season with the lowest-scoring week thus far. Only one team eclipsed the 100-point mark and only by 15 points. With the highest margin of victory being 25 points, there were no blowouts. In fact, the margin of victory for the six winning teams adds up to just 66 points.

We selected no game of the week this time, but if there was one, it would have been the Ironmen and the Drifters. Both teams needed a win to stay close behind their division leaders, the Phantoms and the Plungers. It turns out that events in ONE game would decide the outcome - Seattle and Dallas. Seattle won, but lost Trent Dilfer before he could score for the Drifters. Emmitt Smith became the greatest running back ever to have broken Walter Payton's rushing record, netting the Ironmen 17 points. Please notice the caveat after the word ever.

In other action:

The Plungers drop one to Dennis' Wolverines 91-99, allowing the Ironmen to tie them for first place in the Mountains Division.

The Warlocks forget to rest Brett Favre during the bye, but it doesn't matter - none of the Warlocks' QBs score and Shawn's Lone Gunmen snag a rare victory - 56-42.

In the first "Battle of the Brothers" this season, Dean's Orcas suffer through Tom Brady's slump and Kurt Warner's injury, posting 40 points to Brent and Doug's Ospreys' 55 points.

Finally, the defending SFFL Champs just can't seem to get a break. Bill's Hornets lose a squeaker to Brian's Buckheads, 80-78. The Hornets are sixth in the league and second in the Highlander Conference for points scored, but have managed just one win. Everyone brings their best when they battle the defending champion - the Hornets lead the league with points against - 803.

Game of the Week

After a couple of painful losses, Scott's Plungers will try to rebound against the SFFL-leading Thom's Phantoms. Brian takes the easy pick - Scott's Plungers. The Phantoms lose Deuce McAllister and Aaron Brooks to a bye and their #2 QB, Michael Vick is up against Baltimore's defense. The Plungers have McNabb at Chicago, Dillon at Houston, and Mason at Indianapolis.

Editor's Note OK, I gotta admit it's gonna be a tough game. But I'm still gonna pick Thom's Phantoms to win this one in the end . . .

Week Nine 2002

SFFL Week 9

Back-to-back low-scoring weeks pretty much sums up the action this week. No one eclipses the 100-point mark and one team barely makes it into double digits.

In the game of the week, Scott's Plungers needed to make a good showing in order to topple SFFL-Leading Thom's Phantoms. The highest-scoring player for the Plungers -- The Spotlight, a.k.a. Keyshawn Johnson -- rode the pine while the Phantoms started the multi-talented Michael Vick at QB. But, Brian's predictions prove true as the Phantoms lose Aaron Brooks and Deuce McCallister to a bye and Vick scores the big Goose-Egg against the Baltimore defense. Scott's Plungers come out on top 61-52.

In other action:

The Buckheads lead the league in scoring, but Thom's Phantoms went into the week with the best record. Had the Buc's started Duce Staley over the injured Troy Brown in week 5, the story would be different and the Buckheads would now be one victory away from winning the "I Beat Brian" pot and doing away with the "I Beat Brian Club" forever.
That has nothing to do with the matchups this week, but Brian's Buckheads have something to feel good about as they ascend to the top of the SFFL with a 92-53 victory over Shawn's Lone Gunmen and a loss by Thom's Phantoms. The Bucs benefit from another outstanding performance by the second pick of the draft -- Marshall Faulk -- besting the Gunmen 92-53. One more victory, and the Buckheads ice a playoff spot.
Editor's Note -- confirmed.

Tiki Barber, Tommy Maddox and Hines Ward propel Rich's Ironmen past Dennis' Wolverines 99-47. With the victory, the Ironmen preserve a tie with Scott's Plungers for the lead in the Mountain Division.

With the Secret Agent Men and Lynn and Kila's Drifters, it came down running backs - Ahman Green and Ricky Williams. Marc's Secret Agent Men erase a 7-point deficit with a 29-point performance by Ahman Green on Monday Night Football.

Playing the right players is crucial to success in the SFFL. Tony's Warlocks stick with Brett Favre and score just six points while benching "Bad Brad" Johnson, who could have scored 41 for the spellcasters. That might have cost him, but Brent and Doug's Ospreys get nothing from their Kansas City players during their bye week. Tony's Warlocks win 63-12.
Editor's note -- this is why it is crucial to submit a lineup. The Ospreys didn't, and paid the price.

Bill's Hornets needed a strong showing by kicker Olindo Mare Monday night. Trailing the Orca's by just 8 points, it looked as if they had a chance. The Orcas had a big game from Tom Brady, Mare's Dolphins squander scoring opportunities and Dean's Orcas outlast the Hornets 57-55.

Game of the Week

Battle of the Brothers II

This week, it's hard to pick any game BUT the Plungers and the Buckheads - two high-scoring teams who sit at the top of their divisions. Brian choses his own team - the Buckheads - to win the Sibling Rivalry Bowl as the Plungers lose Kevin Johnson, Peerless Price and Keyshawn Johnson to a bye.

Week Ten 2002

SFFL Week 9 update

The Elias scoring bureau changed a play from a game in week 9, and it changed one of our scores. This has been approved by the commissioner, as all such changes must be in our league. Congratulations to Bill's Hornets who picked up their second win.

SFFL Week 10

It's been a strange year, with no Thursday games until Thanksgiving. Personally, I like it better that way. Dean's Orcas came roaring back with a triple digit score over the Wolverines. Tom Brady provided three touchdowns AND a two point conversion.

The High scoring team was Rich's Ironmen, beating the hapless Warlocks. The low scoring team was the Ospreys, whose chances could improve if they submitted a lineup.

Finally, with only four games remaining in the regular season, Brian's Buckheads have clinched a playoff berth with their win over the Plungers in our Game of the Week. The Buckheads have the highest total score in the league. The second highest scoring Phantoms can clinch a playoff spot this week with a win.

. . . and this week begins the second round of Divisional Play. Good luck to all, and remember that divisional record is more important than total points scored!

Week Eleven 2002

SFFL Week 11

Parity returned to the league -- the three best teams are at 8-3, the two worst at 3-8. The other cool thing I can say -- all of the 8-3 teams are in the playoffs, while neither of the 3-8 teams have been mathematically eliminated yet!

There was also no particularly outstanding player this week, although if the Ospreys had started both Jeff Garcia and Terrell Owens, they would have stood a better chance. As it was, they lost to Shawn's Lone Gunmen this week in the battle of the 3-7 teams.

Scott's Plungers were the high scoring team this week, barely nipping it over Marc's Secret Agent Men, with a final score of 107-103.

Also garnering a four-point victory were Rich's Ironmen, who bypassed the Hornets for their 8th win of the season.

Divisional games continue this week, with only Brian's Buckheads standing any kind of chance to go undefeated in their division. But first they must get past the rival Warlocks this week, and the Orcas next week.

Reminder

Thursday game next week (Thanksgiving) so get your lineups in early. I'll try to get the stats posted late Monday night if I can.

Week Twelve 2002

SFFL Week 12

First off, congratulations to the Buckheads and the Phantoms, who have clinched their division. The cool thing (from a league perspective) is that no other team is definitely out of the playoffs yet. Quite a change from having a team or two that have very few wins . . .

The Atlanta Falcons defense scored a touchdown and a shutout this week, carrying Bill's Hornets over their divisional rivals, the Lone Gunmen.

The other interesting story from that division is the Ospreys, who with three wins are not yet out of the playoff picture. And while not mathematically required, I believe it's a good thing to say they must win their last two games -- rebounding from a loss this week to Marc's Secret Agent Men.

A last-minute lineup change for Brian's Buckheads gave him the points he needed to avoid a tie with the divisional rival Warlocks. The Buckheads are now 3-0 in divisional play, with only the Orcas to beat.

Perhaps those same Orcas will rebound from their loss this week to Thom's Phantoms, who got thirty points from Seahawk Shaun Alexander.

In other action this week, Dennis' Wolverines scrambled past their divisional rival, the rookie Drifters. And Rich's Ironmen handed the rookie Plungers their second loss to take solid control of the Mountain division.

Reminder

Thursday game this week (Thanksgiving). If you need to change the lineup status (start or bench) of a Patriot, a Lion, a Redskin, or a Cowboy this week, you need to get your lineup in early. Best of luck!

Week Thirteen 2002

Editor's Note -- here are the notes by Brian. Insightful and accurate analysis.

A quick reminder also -- remember that teams in the playoffs get to pick three extra guys on the bench for "tiebreakers."
Remember also that nobody is out of the playoffs -- in week 17 all non-superbowl teams vie for the title of Spud!

Week 13 - Down to the Wire

Just one week left to play and the race to the playoffs is heated. Two teams have been eliminated and it's not the teams you'd expect. Dean's Orcas have clinched a wildcard while Bill's Hornets, Shawn's Lone Gunmen and Brent and Doug's Ospreys vie for the Plains Division Championship -- Each team stands at 4-9 and each team plays a non-divisional rival in week 14.

What would have been the game of the week:

The Ospreys went into Monday night with a two-point deficit. They needed this game to even things up against Bill's Hornets and to force a three-way tie in the Plains Division. With Sebastian Janikowski booting the pigskin for the Ospreys, only a field goal or a few extra points were necessary. The Ospreys come from behind to win 69-58.

In Other Action:

The Plungers dodge needed Charlie Garner to score 7 points more than Curtis Martin on Monday night. The Plungers get it and eke out a win over Shawn's Lone Gunmen 86-84.

The Phantoms start QB Michael Vick in a record-breaking performance. Vick sets the single-game rushing record for a QB and leads the Phantoms to a 134-125 victory that eliminates the Drifters.

The Secret Agent Men play spoiler and keep the Ironmen from clinching their division thanks to a 43-point performance by Drew Bledsoe. Rich's Ironmen couldn't have made a difference even if they had played the Steelers' starting QB - Slash. The SAM win 98-49.

Playoff Scenarios

Highlander Conference

I'm pretty certain this has never happened before. There is only one team with a winning record entering the playoffs in the Highlander Conference - Brian's Buckheads. If the Orcas lose, there will be three teams with losing records claiming playoff spots in the Highlander Conference.

As for the other four teams - Hornets, Warlocks, Lone Gunmen, Ospreys - they're all still in it. They're playing to see who plays the Buckheads and who plays the Orcas.

Plains Division:

With all three teams at 4-9 going into week 14, it's anybody's division.

The Ospreys take the division with a win, thanks to a 3-1 division record. They will also take the division if they lose and both the Hornets and Lone Gunmen Lose.

The Hornets take the division with both a win and a loss by the Ospreys. The Hornets also clinch a wildcard with a win.

The Lone Gunmen, with a 1-3 division record, must hope for a win against the Drifters and losses by both the Ospreys and the Hornets to take the division.

Park Division:

In the Park Division, the Buckheads have already clinched the division. Dean's Orcas have also clinched a wildcard berth and will play the Plains Division Champion. At 4-9, Tony's Warlocks are one of three teams vying for a wildcard.

The Warlocks are in the worst-possible position at this point. Their division record is 1-3 and they must hope for a victory against the Phantoms and a loss by at least two of the teams in the Plains Division for any chance at a wildcard. It doesn't matter which two teams - only that two teams lose.

Clansmen Conference

The teams in the playoffs are not in question - It's the Phantoms, Ironmen, Plungers, and Wolverines. The Drifters and Secret Agent Men are out. But who plays who in week 15 will not be decided until the dust settles after week 14.

Valley Division:

The Phantoms have already clinched the division here. The Wolverines have clinched a wildcard. The Lynn and Kila's Drifters have been eliminated.

Mountains Division:

Scott's Plungers and Rich's Ironmen have clinched a playoff spot - but which playoff spot? The Ironmen stand at 9-4 with a 2-2 Division record. The Plungers are 8-5, also 2-2 in their division. The Ironmen take the division with a win against the Orcas in week 14. The Plungers take the division with a win against Bill's Hornets and a loss by the Ironmen thanks to their total points scored. Marc's Secret Agent Men have been eliminated.

Game of the Week:

Impossible to pick any one game this week with the Highlander Conference so tight. So here are four games of the week:

Wolverines @ Ospreys

Ospreys win, they get the division. Wolverines battle for playoff hierarchy.

Phantoms @ Warlocks:

A must win for the Warlocks - They win, they might be in. Lose and they're out.

Drifters @ Lone Gunmen

Drifters play spoiler and the Gunmen need a LOT of help to make it. Gunmen lose, they're out.

Plungers @ Hornets

The Hornets don't HAVE to win, but it makes things a lot easier if they do. Plungers take the division with a win and a loss by the Ironmen. The Hornets also claim a playoff spot with a win.

Editor's Note -- Whew!

Week Fourteen 2002

Week 14 - On to the Playoffs!

Let's wrap up our Games of the Week from week 13. Several teams could clinch playoff spots with a win -- none of them did.

Brent and Doug's Ospreys were victimized by Dennis' Wolverines in a close game with the second highest score of the week. A three touchdown performance by Jon Kitna (who knew?) was one difference in the game -- another was that the Ospreys sat start running back Priest Holmes for some reason.

Second game of the week -- Tony's Warlocks failed to score enough points on Monday Night to pick up the win over Thom's Phantoms. The Phantoms didn't have the highest score of the week, but finish with the best regular season record this year (11-3).

Lynn and Kila's Drifters got to play spoiler for our third game of the week, and boy did they ever. Ricky Williams (now compared with the good O.J. Simpson) helped the Drifters to the highest score of the week, 122. It's just their hard luck that a 7-7 team can't make the playoffs in the Clansmen conference, while two 4-10 teams do in the Greater Spokane League (er, I mean Highlander Conference).

Finally, the Hornets could clinch the division with a win, which they failed to achieve over rookie phenom Scott's Plungers. The score in this game happened to be enough to give the division to the Plungers as well, 1217 to 1121.

Playoff Preview

Ospreys vs Orcas -- It's the Osbournes of the playoffs, with this family rivalry. These two teams played each other in week 8, with the Ospreys taking the gold in a low scoring affair. If Garcia and Owens had started that week, the Ospreys would break 100, and it's my bet they win this battle. Brian's Analysis I think you're right. The Orcas have two of the premier QBs from 2002, but neither of them is consistent and high scoring enough to make an impact compared to opposing teams' QBs. Besides, more than a few of the Ospreys' losses have been due to not starting the right players.

Plungers vs Ironmen -- Last year's star rookie and this year's star rookie matched up in weeks 4 and 12, and experience won out in each case. In fact, the Ironmen made up for 40% of the Plunger's losses this year. Assuming Rich has power, I predict him to repeat his win in this round of the playoffs. Brian's Analysis The Plungers have lost Donovan and have sorry backups in Harrington and Brunell. But they did come back to take the division and have players who are fighting for playoff berths. The Ironmen can't seem to start the right QB and will lost to the Plungers.

Buckheads vs Hornets -- It seems appropriate that Brian's road to the Mug goes straight through last year's champs, Bill's Hornets. They also met in week 8, where the 5-2 Buckheads squeaked out a win over the 1-6 Hornets by a final score of 80-78. This was at a time when Gannon and the Raiders were hot, and Marshall Faulk was not. Since neither is now, I give the slight edge for the rematch to the Hornets. Brian's Analysis Gannon is the most dependable, consistent QB in the league. Tomlinson caught on late and the Buckheads have players who make up the difference. Besides, the Buckheads' players all have something to play for - Buckheads by a lot.

Phantoms vs Wolverines -- These two teams met in weeks 2 and 11, and in both cases the Wolverines dominated the Phantoms, by scores of 137 to 108 and 96 to 81. In fact, the 8-6 Wolverines accounted for 67% of the Phantom's losses this year!
Brian's Analysis The last team anyone wants to face in the playoffs is the Wolverines. They've scored better than eight of the teams in the league and strength of schedule was their downfall. At 8-6, it wasn't much of a downfall. The Phantoms have had a few mega-scoring games, which accounts for the points scored disparity between them and the Wolverines. Wolverines take it by more than 20 points.

Our season doesn't end until the bowl games (Super and Spud), but some awards are final at this point. Congratulations to these recipients:
  • Park division champ -- Buckheads

Final Notes

For weeks 15-17, remember, you may submit three sequential tie breaking players from your bench. If the regular score is ties, the first two players will be compared, then the second two, then the third. Point of advice -- picking a kicker will nearly guarantee that you get some points in that tie breaking position.

Week Fifteen 2002

Week 15 - Two Division Winners Out

Clinton Portis had a heck of a game, a record breaker of a game, with four touchdowns (two long) and over 200 yards. I asked the league whether they thought 50 points was too much for this sort of performance, and got only silence in reply. Personally, I think a great performance like that is worth less points, in the late thirties I think.

Anyhow, that performance was not enough to net the game ball for the Wolverines, who were edged out of the playoffs by Thom's Phantoms. If the secretary had played the right people, the Phantoms could have scored many more points, but such is the life of a fantasy league. I mean, who predicted Seattle would win?.

The second team into the playoffs are Brian's Buckheads, picking up a seven point win over the Hornets. Duce Staley's performance was matched by that of Peyton Manning, and I think the whole game came down to Patriot Troy Brown.

Next into the playoffs are the Commissioner's Own Dean's Orcas. The difference in the scores was 28 points, the same as scored by Viking Randy Moss. If he can keep this up for the next few weeks, the Vikings won't look to bad and the Orcas just might win a bowl game.

Finally, in the close game, in the "could go either way" game, Rich's Ironmen rise up and squash their divisional rivals, the rookie Plungers. Green Bay's Ryan Longwell proved the better kicker than New England's Adam Vinatieri, and was nearly the difference in the game.

Playing for a Superbowl Spot

Phantoms vs Ironmen -- These teams only met in week 6, shortly after the supplemental draft. The final score was 84-48, and I see a similar reversal of digits this time. Little trivia tidbit -- three of the Ironmen's four defenses scored that week. You can guess which one he played ;) Brian's Analysis (coming soon)

Buckheads vs Orcas -- This pair met up in week 2 and 13, but the result was the same each time. Buckheads triple digits, Orcas take another loss. Unfortunately, the I Beat Brian pot is not available for this game, Dean. I predict a close one, but I think the Buckheads will win this matchup. Brian's Analysis (coming soon)

Final Notes

For those of you who missed the awards, take a look back at Week 14. No new awards for this round of the playoffs, but the teams who win in week 15 will either net prize for Superbowl Winner ($120) or Runner Up ($40). All prizes to be awarded at the Superbowl Party, so be there!

Week Sixteen 2002

Week 16 - On to the Superbowl!

This week in the pictures we highlight those unseen performers, the Tight End and the Kicker.

On more divisional winner eliminated as the Buckheads fall to wildcard Dean's Orcas. Brian's QB Kerry Collins turned in a fine performance from the bench, with four passing touchdowns and 363 yards of offense. Dean's receiver Randy Moss was solid, but the difference in the game was TE Marcus Pollard, covering 69 yards and a two point conversion. The Orcas have had great success in recent years at the Tight End position, even though many other teams in the league have relegated that position to a blocker.

This is the Orca's second appearance in the big dance -- their first was a win in 1995. The big fish has been eliminated from the playoffs on several occasions by the Phantoms . . .

. . . who try for an unprecedented fourth Superbowl win. Their wins were in 1994, 1996, and 1998. They also appeared in the 1997 superbowl, losing to Tony's Knights.

To get there this year, Thom's Phantoms had to get past the Ironmen. Both teams lost their starting QBs in this game (Griese's left knee, Bulger's spine) so the points stayed even. Jay Feely turned in a great performance as the Phantoms' kicker, and ended up being the difference in this game.

Spudbowl!

Everybody else plays for the Spudbowl in week 17. Here's a quick reminder of what's up:
Submit a lineup just like you would in an ordinary week -- the key is, you want to score the most points you can. If you don't send in a lineup, we'll use the last one we received . . .
Of the ten teams, the one that scores the most gets their Team name scribed on the Mister Potato Head, and receives a bonus pick in between the first and second rounds of next years draft. Good Luck!

Superbowl Matchup

                  Quarterbacks
  Orcas Phantoms
279 NE Tom Brady 285 NO Aaron Brooks
124 CHI Jim Miller 267 ATL Michael Vick
96 WAS Shane Matthews 162 STL Mark Bulger
60 STL Kurt Warner 113 HOU David Carr

The Orcas were crippled by the loss of first round
hold-over Kurt Warner, although Tom Brady has been
solid. The Phantoms have cousins Brooks and Vick,
although recently Vick has been the better performer.
Edge: Even

                  Running Backs
  Orcas Phantoms
204 TEN Eddie George 265 SEA Shaun Alexander
127 PIT Jerome Bettis 256 NO Deuce McAllister

                               74 ATL T.J.Duckett

First round keeper Shaun Alexander hasn't been solid
this year, but definitely "good enough". Except for
Duckett, the rest of the Phantoms outscore the Orcas
best.
Edge: Phantoms

                  Wide Receivers
  Orcas Phantoms
186 MIN Randy Moss 171 CHI Marty Booker
131 OAK Jerry Porter 142 CIN Chad Johnson

                               70 NO Jerome Pathon

The Phantoms have solid depth. The Orcas wide Randy
Moss has begun scoring again, and should prove solid
in the game. The Orcas have the edge in the primary
WR, but the Phantoms own the secondary.
Edge: Even

                  Tight Ends
  Orcas Phantoms
86 IND Marcus Pollard ** SEA Jerramy Stevens
 60 CAR Wesley Walls
 49 TEN Frank Wycheck

The Orcas have the obvious edge here; Marcus Pollard
has been a key for the Orca lineup. Thom dropped TE
Jerramy Stevens after week six to acquire the backup
QB by the name of Marc Bulger.
Edge: Orcas

                  Kickers
  Orcas Phantoms
128 IND Mike Fanderjagt 153 ATL Jay Feely
121 TEN Joe Nedney

Vanderjagt and Nedney are two peas in a pod in terms
of score. Feely has outscored them by 25%, allowing
Phantoms Owner Thom to cut backup Todd Peterson, and
acquire rookie WR Dez White.
Edge: Phantoms

                  Defensive Team
  Orcas Phantoms
130 Oakland Raiders 115 Philadelphia Eagles
37 Minnesota Vikings 108 New England Patriots

The Raiders have scored the most for the year, but the
Patriots and Eagles aren't far behind. It really comes
down to strength of schedule:

130 Oakland vs KC 115 Philadelphia vs NYG
37 Minnesota vs Detroit 108 New England vs Miami

The one that means the most is in NY, where the Eagles
fight for home field through the playoffs. This battle
of defensive teams will be settled on Saturday.
Slight Edge: Phantoms
