Welcome Back

The SFFL kicked off to a roaring start this week. Here's the scores:

The high scoring team this week was Thom's Phantoms, who absolutely annihilated the SFFL Champion Dean's Orcas 135-40. The Phantoms were on all cylinders -- a double digit performance from all but the defense. The Orcas better quarterback languished on the bench, but ultimately wouldn't have been enough this week.

Priest Holmes proved his worth as a keeper, leading Brent & Doug's Ospreys past the Plungers. Jeff Garcia proved to be the better of the two keeper quarterbacks in the contest. Scott's Plungers got a decent performance from WR Chris Chambers, but that was not enough to win this contest.

Rich's Ironmen handed the Buckheads their first loss, denying Brian the slim chance of a 14-0 season. Keeper Tommy Maddox proved stellar in the contest. The good news for the league is that Rich wasn't a participant in the I Beat Brian club. Brian goes up against divisional rival Dean for his first challenge next week.

First round, first overall draft pick Steve McNair led Shawn's Lone Gunmen past the rival Secret Agent Men. This was a close contest, and Marc's team only just missed picking up enough Monday Night points for the win. This game highlighted one of the future Supplemental Draft picks, punter turned kicker Craig Hentrich.

Dennis' Wolverines, the first winner of the revamped Spud Bowl trophy, used bonus pick Torry Holt (and studs Clinton Portis and Daunte Culpepper) to smash past Bill's Hornets. Adding insult to injury, the shutout Buffalo Bills sat on Bill's bench.

One of the two teams to gain their new helmets this year (scroll down), Lynn and Kila's Drifters stomped their way past the old school Warlocks. Brett Favre proved to score as many points as Jon Kitna, and I don't think I can say anything else after that.

Next Week in the SFFL

This is the space I would normally use to pontificate about my picks, but not this week. I have, however, updated the team pages with the appropriate "picks" boxes, so go pick those winners !

Current Week's Transactions

There's no fantasy football page out there *not* talking about the new rushing record, so let me jump on the bandwagon. First of all, these points allowed Marc's Secret Agent Men to rust the Ironmen and set the "highest score for the week" bar that much higher. This divisional win allows the Secret Agent Men to lead their division despite being 1-1.

The old record was held by Corey Dillon from 2000, who was a perennial standout for Jeff's Wizards. For most history, check out the SFFL History page.

Brent & Doug's Ospreys won to remain undefeated, if 2-0 can be counted as such. They beat the Lone Gunmen, who can count the year 2000 as the last time they reached .500 --- their record this year is 1-1.

2-0 Thom's Phantoms also won this week, defeating the Wolverines. The Phantoms are still the top rated organization on the new Power Poll, which is located on the Coaches page.

Darrel Jackson led the Seahawks to 2-0, and Dean's Orcas to a victory also --- as Dean Beat Brian. The Orcas take the lead in their division at 1-1.

The final SFFL team at 2-0 are Lynn and Kila's Drifters, who knocked the Hornets down to 0-2. Week 3 is their first Divisional game versus the rival Wolverines. Should both the Drifters and the Phantoms remain undefeated, the contest will be decided in their week 4 matchup.

Scott's Plungers were the third lowest scoring team this week, but it was enough to defeat the Warlocks, whose bench outscored both teams on the field.

Week 3 in the SFFL

Brian got beat this week, but managed a 5-1 in the Picks. Marc and Dennis are 3-3, and Thom, Tony and Rich are 2-4. This week, hmmm --- I think Phantoms, Drifters, Plungers, Lone Gunmen, Warlocks, and finally the Buckheads to avenge their loss. You can pick 'em too --- it's on your "submit lineups" page.

First and foremost, the Supplemental Draft is coming up. It's at Tony's house in October, but I can't say more at this time. I won't be there this time, but it's for a good reason --- my baby girl is due at roughly the same time. I'll participate via phone for the whole draft, however. Got a speaker phone, Tony?

Thom's Phantoms started their backup quarterback, Patrick Ramsey, in a move that vaults them to 3-0 on this young season. The Ospreys bench, dying to get into this game, outscored both teams on the field. Reggie Wayne also watched from the bench in the non-divisional contest.

The last time the Phantoms started 3-0 was 1996, when they won their second Superbowl. Since 1996, the only team that started 3-0 and didn't make the playoffs were Rich's Ironmen of 2001. This factoid brought to you by SFFL History.

In the same division, Lynn and Kila's Drifters scored big to pummel the hapless Wolverines, who fall to 0-2 in the division. Ricky Williams provided 149 yards and a touchdown. Both Kerry Collins and Jake Plummer watched from the bench, where Collins won a game of checkers against Monday night phenom Plummer.

In the blowout of the week, Marc's Secret Agent Men beat the divisional rival Plungers 103-59. This moves them to the top of the Power Poll, which is located on the Coaches page. Except for the Miami defense, all of Marc's best players were on the field this week.

In a rematch of week 1 and a non-divisional contest, Rich's Ironmen again beat the hapless Buckheads, who fall to 0-3 on the year. About now Dean would point out that He Beat Brian also --- but isn't this starting resemble shooting fish in a barrel?

In a perennial divisional rivalry, Bill's Hornets faced Shawn's Lone Gunmen and came out the victor. QB Peyton Manning was in fine form with a pair of scores in the victory.

Tony's Warlocks scored 20 points less than last week, as the Warlocks fell to 0-3 in a loss to Dean's Orcas. The Orcas gave some advise on Beating Brian to the Warlocks coach, who is willing to give it a go in:

Week 4 in the SFFL

Last week's pick champion Brian did the same as me this week, 2-4. Marc was also in that illustrious boat. Our keen pickers this week were Dean and Dennis at 4-2. Remember, picks are free and on your "submit lineups" page, so go for it!

The battle royale this week will be Phantoms vs Drifters, both 3-0. I pick the Phantoms to win this contest. Despite the rhetoric above, I think the Buckheads will get their first win over the Warlocks. Finally, I pick the Ospreys, Ironmen, Lone Gunmen and Secret Agent Men.

The first round draft picks and keepers finally turned it on this week, and just in time too. The SFFL Supplemental Draft is this Saturday at Tony's house. The festivities convene at 1:00 pm. For the first time in many years, I'll miss this one -- and hopefully my wife doesn't deliver during the middle of it.

If you need a list of available players, just click. No particular sort order here, and I think I got everybody. Ah well, it's free research, and you get what you pay for.

Six touchdowns --- well, that's the way they are doing it in Indianapolis these days. This week's performance was enough to get Bill's Hornets back to .500, and drag the Ospreys down to that same level. Stephen Davis put in quite a performance also, but that Manning character just about beat the Ospreys by himself.

The coach of Dean's Orcas was pretty worried Monday night, so I guess that made it quite a game. However, Ahman Green wasn't *quite* enough to drag the Secret Agent Men past the Orcas. If only they'd had a Quarterback who started, they probably would have won this game. Even odds the S.A.Men pick up a QB in the supplemental . . .

Another one of the high draft picks performing this week helped Brian's Buckheads pick up their first win this week! Rich Gannon also did a smash up job. The consolation prize is that Tony's Warlocks now have the first overall pick in the supplemental draft.

*Just* outscoring the Buckheads this week and picking up the high score for the week were Lynn and Kila's Drifters, whose 129 carried them well past the Phantoms this week. The Indianapolis factor was the difference in this one, with 158 yards and three solid touchdowns.

Back to the close games --- Dennis' Wolverines did a nearly optimal job, leaving just 18 points on the bench. This was enough to hand the Lone Gunmen their third loss of this young season. As a consolation prize, the sharpshooters get the second overall pick in the Supplemental Draft.

And speaking of bench usage, the Plungers should have pulled *somebody* off their bench to replace Koren Robinson, on a bye this week with the rest of the Seahawks. Rich's Ironmen carried away this victory.

Week 5 in the SFFL

I'll put up the picks results in next week's issue --- this one is late enough as it is. No picks from me until I see who takes Boldin in the supplemental draft.

Week Five

The supplemental draft was a success for most, and now we start the downhill run to the Superbowl. The Orcas have an early lead on clinching their division. The Drifters and Phantoms are both 4-1, but in the same division, so you know this is going to be a fight to the finish. But let's get to the scores . . .

Tony's Warlocks used the Safeties of the Minnesota Defense to pull to an almost-win this week against Marc's Secret Agent Men. Tony also got a decent performance out of kicker Sebastian Janikowski, while Marc benefitted from a good Brad Johnson game on Monday Night.

When asked "Have you stopped beating your wife?" the coach of Dean's Orcas merely shrugged, then put up 104 for a score. The Drifters had only Marvin Harrison and his 35 points, but Dean used Gus Frerotte, Randy Moss, and the other Ricky Williams for more than 20 points each.

Our high score this week goes to Bill's Hornets, who handed the Wolverines another loss this week. Peyton Manning was good (as usual), but the real story of this game was the return of David Boston. His 34 points proved nearly insurmountable, even against the Wolverines Clinton Portis.

Shawn's Lone Gunmen picked up another non-divisional win this week, which gets him halfway to last years finish of 4-10.

The Buck brothers scored just 38 points each this week, but unfortunately were not playing against each other. Brent & Doug's Ospreys took advantage of the lull to put together a 73-38 drubbing and improve to 3-2 in their division.

Thom's Phantoms were the other beneficiary of the bad Bucks, trouncing the Buckheads by sixty points.

In all seriousness, though, a hearty Thank You to Brian for all his work in helping this years Supplemental Draft come together. If I can get Shawn to vote for it, this might also be our last Supplemental Draft, which would mean we at least end on a high note.

Week Six

The Warlocks finally turned it on this week, in a fiery brilliance not seen since
1997.

For the second week in a row it's a defense we feature, and for the second week in a row, that defense belongs to Tony's Warlocks. Last week it was a tie with the Secret Agent Men, this week the victim was Bill's Hornets. Marc Bulger put in a decent performance also, and Tony ended up with the High Score.

I mentioned 1997 earlier --- the last year that Tony won the superbowl. It was also the last year he finished better than 8-6. You can read all about 1997 and some of 1996 and 1998 on the history page.

Marc's Secret Agent Men also bounced back from last weeks tie, beating the Wolverines. Brad Johnson and Ahman Green were nearly all the offense he needed, but it doesn't hurt that Dennis' QB was down for the count. R.I.P. Jake Plummer?

Speaking of the porcelain throne, Scott's Plungers could have put together a better lineup this week. They didn't, however, and were beaten by a low-scoring Lynn and Kila's Drifters. No real standouts for either team in this game.

Speaking of the Bucks, QB Doug Johnson led the Buckheads down the hole while Trent Green led Brent & Doug's Ospreys to a solid victory. Despite Trent's 400 yard performance, there were no photos featuring him this week, so I went with a shot of his E-bay bobble head doll. Which *just* went up in price . . .

Let's see, where were we? Shawn's Lone Gunmen put together a good team led by Steve McNair and doubled up Dean's Orcas. I would say more except that this traditionally happens on the Minnesota bye week, so it's not really noteworthy. Moving on . . .

. . . to a victory by Thom's Phantoms over the Ironmen. This game was closer than I would have liked, and who knew Derrick Mason was going to have such a grand game? Rich is one of the owners who has disappeared to the Bermuda triangle, and if he had picked up a quarterback in the supplemental he might have had a victory this week.

Week Seven

A huge score from Thom's Phantoms, as the team wins one for the newest little lady -- Kiana Marie Denholm, born 10/18/2003. Now the scores . . .

A great performance (and about time) by Aaron Brooks led Thom's Phantoms to their sixth win this week over the Hornets. The score of 172 surpasses the previous high score of 2003 (148, by the Hornets) by 24 points. The Phantoms are one of two teams that are 6-1, and both are in the same division! A consolation prize for the Hornets --- this loss lifts them into the lead for the "toughest schedule" race, with 722 points against in 7 games.

In only slightly related news, the Phantoms are the only team to exercise their waiver, cutting injured kicker Joe Nedney for Houston rookie running back Domanick Davis. Remember, you have one free waiver to use per week, with no fee.

Lynn and Kila's Drifters also rise to 6-1, by beating the recently hot Warlocks. Tony's team could have won this game easily with the right wide receivers. I look for the Warlocks to improve their lot by adding a few key Running Backs and climb into playoff contention.

One way the Warlocks could go to the playoffs is by beating the division leading Dean's Orcas, who scored their fifth win over the hapless Plungers. Checking the Coaches Notebook, we see that Plungers have scored the weekly low points three times now, and are at the bottom of the Power Rankings.

In other Buck news, the Buckheads lost again, this week to Dennis' Wolverines. The Wolverines had a stand out 20+ points from the first five positions on their roster (QB, RB, and 3 WR) and would have managed six had they started Steve Smith of Carolina instead of Bobby Shaw of Buffalo.

Shawn's Lone Gunmen picked up another win this week against the Secret Agent Men. Shawn's bench scored a record low 3 points this week in the decision. It doesn't hurt that Shawn was one of the two teams to fail to submit supplemental draft picks.

. . . and the other one was Rich's Ironmen. They lost this week to Brent & Doug's Ospreys, and had only 7 points on the bench. Both of Rich's QBs were on bye this week.

Week 7 in the SFFL

Time to play catchup, and summarize the first half of our season.
  • Week 2 Brian led with 5-1, followed by Marc & Dennis at 3-3, then Tony, Rich and Thom at 2-4.
  • Week 3 was led by Dennis and Dean at 4-2, then Thom, Marc, and Brian at 2-4.
  • Week 4 had 10 of 12 owners in! Tony, Bill, Dean, and Lynn were all 4-2; Marc, Rich, Brian, and Scott were 3-3; Thom was 2-4, and Dennis was 1-5.
  • Week 5 had the Tony & Marc tie. Dean was 4-1; Bill, Dennis, and Marc were 3-2; Rich, Tony and Thom were 2-3, and Brian was 0-5.
  • Week 6 Bill and Thom were 4-2; Dennis, Marc and Dean were 3-3; Brian and Tony were 2-4, and Scott was 1-5.
  • Week 7 Dennis, Thom and Bill were 4-2; Brian was 3-3, and Marc and Tony were 2-4.
Grand totals, in alphabetical order: Bill picked an impressive 15-8; Brian was a not-good 15-20; Dean managed 15-8 as well; Dennis split the course at 18-17; Lynn picked 4-2; Marc is sub-par with 16-19; Rich is below average at 7-10; Scott has a poor 4-8; Thom picked a sub-par 16-19; and Tony has the D average 12-17. Nobody has picked 'em all right yet...

This week, I'll pick the Wolverines, Phantoms, Drifters, Warlocks, Hornets, and the Ospreys to upset the Orcas in a close one. Here's that schedule:

Week Eight

Only one team from the Park and Valley divisions didn't win. Can you guess who? Here's the scores . . .

Dennis' Wolverines put together two weeks in a row over one hundred points, this week topping the Plungers. This weeks score of 128 was enough to net the "highest score" award also.

Was this win due to the morale boost provided by Wolverine Waiver Wire acquisition Brian Griese? I cannot say for sure, but I can say that the waiver wire is still open for business. Come one, come all!

The secretary's own Phantoms improved to 7-1, beating the Secret Agent Men. Two of Marc's three wins have come in the division, and I'm sure he can't wait to play the Plungers and Ironmen again. No joy next week, however, as the Secret Agent Men must face the Drifters . . .

. . . who are also now 7-1, beating the aforementioned Ironmen. Lynn and Kila's Drifters managed this feat without a quarterback, as Jay Fiedler was replaced by new Wolverine Brian Griese. What comes around, goes around.

Bill's Hornets picked up a solid win, scoring the century mark against the Buckheads. Stephen Davis and Peyton Manning scored the lion's share of the points, as the Hornets left a lowly 16 points on the bench.

Tony's Warlocks doubled their wins this week in a close match, defeating the Lone Gunmen. Shawn made a last-second waiver wire acquisition to replace his bye-week defensive team, but the 7 points that Dallas got him were two shy of what he needed for the tie.

Finally, we cover the probably Park Division champions. With a win over the Hornets in week 9, Dean's Orcas can clinch the division and a spot in the playoffs. When reached for comment, the Orcas coach could only mutter something about Disneyland.

Week 8 in the SFFL

Bill and Thom picked 5-1 this week, and Bill improves his overall average to 20-9. Perhaps we should consult with him on who to pick this week? Tony was 4-2, Marc and Brian were 2-4, and Scott a lowly 1-5.

This week, I'll stick with the Wolverines and Phantoms, I'd like to see the Secret Agent Men and the Lone Gunmen (and the Huskies?) and finally I'll go with the commissioners: Orcas and the Warlocks. Too many bye week players for the Hornets and Ospreys. Here's that schedule:

Week Nine

Same as last week, the Park and Valley divisions dominate. A different team became the odd man out, however, as the Buckheads won.

Brian's Buckheads doubled their wins on the year and proved that they could still tie the divisional leader, the Orcas. It was certainly not Tui-time, as the Buckheads QB left the game early. Mike Vanderjagt stepped up and kicked up and won the game for the Buckheads with three field goals and two extra points.

Who will replace Tuiasosopo this week? Certainly not Tim Couch, who was acquired by the Lone Gunmen this week in Waivers. Just a few weeks left, so get those waivers in if you need 'em.

Topping the century mark for the third week in a row, Dennis' Wolverines polished off the Ironmen this time. Although they didn't have the high score for the week, the Wolverines are definitely firing on all cylinders and ready for the playoffs. With key victories over the Drifters and Phantoms, they could win the division, but are more likely to claim one of the wildcard spots. This is also bad news for the Ironmen, who must now beat the Secret Agent Men or come up with a better record than the Wolverines to make the playoffs.

Speaking of Marc's team, the high score for the week was achieved by the Secret Agent Men who beat the Drifters this week. This victory helps in their quest for the Mountain Division championship, but this is most certainly an uphill struggle.

The Secret Agent Men have one card in their favor, however. According to the Power Poll on the Coaches Page, they have the most efficient team. What this means is that out of 1003 potential points they could have earned this season, they have 892 of them, or 88.9 %. From that same page, the Phantoms have the strongest team, (the highest potential) a Lucas-like 1138 points. Finally, the Ospreys have the highest bench points at 648, which almost surpasses their starting total of 693. With better player selection, the Ospreys could easily be better than 5-4. It's important to get those lineups in!

Back to the Park division, the current leader and not yet clinching Dean's Orcas used a solid performance by QB Tom Brady to grab the victory over the Hornets this week. Last weeks stars just didn't score enough for Bill to win this one, and he must win a few down the stretch to wrest the divisional lead from the Ospreys.

. . . who also lost this week to the solid play of Tony's Warlocks. Marc Bulger and Tony Thomas were the one two punch necessary to put the Ospreys on the ropes this week.

Finally, waiver acquisitions Jake Delhomme and Terry Glenn helped carry Thom's Phantoms to a hard fought victory over the Plungers. Scott's team scored their highest total for the year, but will it be a case of too little, too late as the 1-8 Plungers try to crawl back into this contest?

Week 9 in the SFFL

Thom picked 5-1 this week, and improves to 26-21 overall. Dean, at 4-2, also improves to 19-10. Others were Tony and Brian at 3-3 and Marc and Bill at 2-4.

I can't pick a Park and Valley sweep this week, as the Wolverines challenge the Orcas. I see the overgrown dolphins winning this matchup. Then it's the Buckheads, Warlocks, Phantoms, Drifters. Even with the return of Peyton Manning to the Hornets, I'll pick the high scoring Secret Agent Men to win this evenly matched contest. Here's that schedule:

Week Ten

Topsy-turvy week, as the winners came up the losers -- SFFL and NFL.

That Rudi Johnson did an impressive job this week, and with that Culpepper kid was half the reason that Dennis' Wolverines beat the Orcas. The Wolverines move to only two games out of first in what used to be a tough division. With the loss, the Orcas move a little closer to the Warlocks and Buckheads, but perhaps not enough to lose the division. I guess I should mention that the Wolverines now record their fourth week over 100 points, and only missed the high score by two. Good going!

The high score for the week belongs to Marc's Secret Agent Men, their fourth time with that honor, as they beat the Hornets. At 1024 points, they take over the mantle of top-scoring team from the Phantoms also. The real question is: with that many points, how did Marc's team end up at only 5-4-1 ?

The mountain division doesn't stack up well in the Clansmen conference, and it's likely that only the division champ will go to the playoffs.

Rich's Ironmen did their best to stay alive in this race, by beating the Warlocks this week. The Ironmen manage 37% of their points from the Wide Receiver position, second only to Randy Moss and the Orcas.

And Scott's Plungers became the first team eliminated from the playoffs when they lost to Brian's Buckheads. With only three wins, however, the Warlocks and Buckheads must gain ground on the Plains division to make the playoffs, unless the Orcas lose four in a row.

Back to those upsets. Shawn's Lone Gunmen shot past the Phantoms this week and moved ahead of the Hornets in the Plains division. Tony Gonzalez and his undefeated Chiefs were just one of many factors in this close game.

. . . and Plains division leader Brent & Doug's Ospreys stole the wind from the Drifters to stay ahead of the Lone Gunmen. Both of these teams are looking solid for the playoffs, and this weeks head to head match could be the deciding factor.

Week 10 in the SFFL

Gonna have to dog out on posting the picks again, but I'll do weeks 10 and 11 next week. But wahoo, it's time for divisional play! I'm going to pick the Phantoms, Ospreys, Orcas, and Secret Agent Men. In the non-divisional contests, I like the Drifters and the Hornets. Here's that schedule:

Week Eleven

Crazy week for me personally, but I clinched a playoff spot, so it's all worth it in the end.

Peter Warrick had a solid week, with over 100 yards, a punt return for a touchdown and a 77 yard reception touch down. Those points were more than enough to lead Tony's Warlocks past their long-time divisional rival, the Orcas.

The Orcas still haven't clinched a playoff spot, and can even lose the division to the Buckheads. Due to the strength of the Plains division, even a wildcard spot is not yet assured. The Warlocks can prevent the Buckheads from winning the division with a victory this week.

Brian's Buckheads came up with an unexpected victory over the Drifters this week, who halved their previous 49 point low score. Drew Bledsoe probably shoulders the most blame for this loss, and QB Kerry Collins was seen prepping for week 12.

Brent and Doug's Ospreys waltzed past the Lone Gunmen this week and secured a solid lead in the Plains division.

Bill's Hornets kept their hat in the ring as well with a solid trouncing of their non-divisional opponent Ironmen.

This weeks divisional matchup between the Lone Gunmen and the Hornets will help decide a few things, especially if the Ospreys can win over the Secret Agent Men.

Thom's Phantoms locked up the first playoff spot with the weeks high score over the Wolverines. Deuce McAllister had two rushing touchdowns and 237 offensive yards in the victory. The Wolverines cannot win the division (due to divisional record) but can still pick up a wildcard spot with relative ease.

Drifters must win two more than the Phantoms to win the division, and must beat the Phantoms in week 13. With a single win they can clinch at least a wildcard spot.

And finally, Marc's Secret Agent Men stayed in the lead for the Mountains division with a win over the Plungers. With a win they can clinch the division in week 12, but they will have to play past the 7-4 Ospreys to do so.

The Ironmen can still make it in or win their division with a combination of losses.

Week 11 in the SFFL

Okay, so I do weeks 10 through 12 next week. Sheesh! I will pick the Warlocks to eliminate the Buckheads, the Lone Gunmen to upset the Hornets, and the Drifters and Ironmen over their respective divisional rivals. In the non divisional contests I think the Ospreys will win and I'll pick the Orcas and Phantoms game to end in a hard-fought tie. Here's that schedule:

Week Twelve

The playoff picture is becoming clearer, but first:

Thursday Game This Week!

A brief refresher on the one portion of the SFFL rules that has been updated to make sense ---
rule 4.6 Basically, if you have players on Miami, Green Bay, Detroit, or Dallas AND you want to change their playing status (starter to bench OR bench to starter) you MUST do so before the Thursday games. Read the rule --- I think I made it fairly clear.

Also, I won't be putting up a mid-game report, as I will be in Spokane. Who's buying me a beer?

The Tampa Bay Defense did the trick on Monday night, and Dennis' Wolverines slipped past the Drifters. With two games remaining, this clinches a playoff spot for the Wolverines. The remaining two weeks determine who gets to play the Phantoms in the first round of the playoffs.

Scott's Plungers defeat the divisional Ironmen, subsequently knocking them out of the playoffs also. Keenan McCardell was good for only eight points in the Monday Night game.

The other conference is not so well decided. Bill's Hornets defeated the Lone Gunmen. Now he must beat the Ospreys in week 13 AND win if they win in week 14 to clinch the division. The Hornets also have a leg up on the playoff race, and must now only keep ahead of the Buckheads or Lone Gunmen. Only the Warlocks are not a threat for their position now.

Oh, were we speaking of the Warlocks? Stomped by Brian's Buckheads this week, they cannot now win the division. Warlocks must win out AND hope for a combination of losses to achieve the playoffs this year.

It wasn't the closest game of the week, but it was one of two games where both owners had players in the Monday game. This one went to Thom's Phantoms, who clinch the division with the win. The Orcas loss means they don't clinch the division yet, but now they can with an oh-so-satisfying win over the Buckheads in week 13.

Marc's Secret Agent Men and Brad Johnson survived Ike Hilliard in the Monday night game and gave them a win over the Ospreys. Marc becomes the other divisional winner crowned this week. This loss prevents the Ospreys from clinching the division and puts them in danger of losing it to the Hornets in week 13.

Week Thirteen

This is the week where we play "who's in" and "who's out". First the scores:

Thom's Phantoms take another top score and trounce the Drifters this week, pending a lineup snafu. The Phantoms have the highest starting points, potential points, and bench points, and continue atop the Power Rankings.

Marc's Secret Agent Ment pick up a solid victory over the Ironmen. Like the Phantoms, they clinched a divisional win a few weeks back.

Bill's Hornets beat the Ospreys in a quick game, setting themselves into first place in the Plains division. If they win in week 14 OR the Ospreys lose, the Hornets clinch the division. The Hornets are tied for the "toughest schedule" with 1173.

Dean's Orcas save face with a come-from-behind victory over the Buckheads. This clinches the division for the Orcas, and pushes the Buckheads back to where they might not make the playoffs. Brian's consolation prize is that he is now tied for the "toughest schedule" award.

Dennis' Wolverines beat up the Warlocks this week to pull ahead of the Drifter. The least record will end up having to play the 11-2 Phantoms in the first round.

Scott's Plungers stayed ahead of the Lone Gunmen this week, throwing them down into the morass of "might make it". Shawn's consolation prize is that TE Tony Gonzalez pulled ahead of the Ospreys' Shannon Sharpe in the loss.

OK, the Clansmen are all set for the playoffs. The divisional winners are the Phantoms and Secret Agent Men; the Wildcards are the Wolverines and Drifters. The Ironmen and the resurgent Plungers are both out of Superbowl contention.

In the Highlander conference, things are a bit dicier. The sole divisional winner is the Orcas. Automatically in the playoffs are the Hornets and Ospreys -- the Hornets have the current lead in the division.

Vying for that final Highlander Wildcard spot are the Buckheads and Lone Gunmen at 5-8, and the Warlocks at 4-8-1. Brian has the edge with the best divisional record (2-2) and can clinch the fourth spot with a win over the 8-4 Secret Agent Men this week. Failing that, Shawn can get the spot with a win over the 7-6 Drifters. Tony has the outside track, since his two rivals must lose AND the Warlocks have to top the 11-2 Phantoms.

Week Fourteen

Welcome to the playoffs!

Three of our four post-season matchups are also divisional rivalries. Here's the game-by-game breakdown for week 15.

division winner Orcas 9-5-0 vs wildcard Buckheads 6-8-0

The Orcas beat the Buckheads in week 2, 100-80, and in week 13, 107-100. Week 2 netted the killer whales the coveted "I Beat Brian" pool. Additionally, the Orcas rolled over the Buckheads in the second round last year on their way to a superbowl victory.

division winner Hornets 7-7-0 (or 8-6-0) vs wildcard Ospreys 7-7-0

The hard-luck Ospreys are on a three game losing streak, including a loss to the Hornets in week 13, 83-75. The Hornets also beat the Ospreys in week 4, 96-65, on the strength of six touchdowns by Peyton Manning.

division winner Phantoms 12-2-0 (or 11-3-0) vs wildcard Drifters 7-7-0 (or 8-6-0)

The Drifters have now lost six in a row, including a matchup against the Phantoms in week 13, 119-61. Early in the year, the Drifters led the division by one game, that being a victory over the Phantoms in week 4, 129-85.

division winner Secret Agent Men 8-5-1 vs wildcard Wolverines 9-5-0

The record of the Secret Agent Men is 8-5-1, just slightly worse than their opponent the Wolverines at 9-5-0. Those same Wolverines have put solid points on the board the last few weeks, and finish the year with the highest starting points of any team in the league - 1447. In their sole matchup, the Secret Agent Men defeated the Wolverines in week 6 by a score of 111-73. Here's the schedule:

Week Fifteen

First round results, and a preview of the second round.

Clansmen Conference

Divisional Winner Phantoms versus Drifters

The Phantoms scored double digits from every position, and if they had known that Aaron Brooks would respond so well to scolding they'd have had the high score this week. The Drifters gave a good solid charge on Monday night, scoring 28 from RB Brian Westbrook, 16 from RB Ricky Williams, and 11 from QB Jay Fiedler, but it wasn't enough to tip the balance. Phantoms win, 109-103.

Divisional Winner Secret Agent Men versus Wolverines

The Wolverines have been hot hot hot lately, and didn't cool down for this game. Clinton Portis left the field injured with 26, Joe Horn will pay a big fine but picked up 40; Torry Holt, Edgerrin James and the Tampa Bay Defense also got into double digits. Marc could only counter with 19 points from Ahman Green and 12 from Jamal Lewis. Wolverines win, 140-60.

Phanthoms vs Wolverines

The Phantoms are the only divisional winner remaining in this year's playoffs. The Wolverines have been on a tear lately; the last time they were more than 1 point below 100 was week 6.

This season, history favors the Phantoms, who won both head to head matchups. In week 2, the score was 108-87 and in week 11, the final was 111-99.

Highlander Conference

Divisional winner Orcas versus Buckheads

The Orcas got a strong start, and double digit performances from QB Brady and K Gramatica, along with RB Duckett, WR Jackson, and WR Moss, for a total of 88. The Buckheads came along with a defensive shutout and 34 from Ladainian Tomlinson to negate that, then added 15 from Faulk and 10 from Vanderjagt to win this game 96-88.

Divisional Winner Hornets versus Ospreys

In the team-by-team summary, I mentioned the six touchdown game of Peyton Manning that led to the last victory over the Ospreys. Mister Manning did not disappoint, racking up five touchdowns and 290 yards besides, for a total of 42 points. Problem is, the rest of the Hornets were only mediocre. The Ospreys got strength from QB Trent Green (39), RB Priest Holmes (31), and WR Terrell Owens (21). Ospreys win, 128-86

Ospreys vs Buckheads

In 1996, the Ospreys lost the Spud Bowl to the Buckheads. In 2000, the wild card Ospreys made it to the Superbowl, losing to the Mariners.

These two teams have only faced each other once this season, back in week 6. The Ospreys won that game 102 to 60 on the strength of a 400 yard performance by QB Trent Green.

The Superbowl is over, and the SFFL crowns it's champion. This year, it is Thom's Phantoms who take the award (their fourth) over the Buckheads, 106-91.

The Spudbowl and all prizes will be announced via email in a timely fashion.

Thanks all for a great year. Please drop me a line if you wish to be involved in a complete cleanup (without revision) of the existing rules and / or a committee to suggest rules updates for the next year.

The Superbowl is this year at Brian's House, February 1st if I read my calendar correctly. Be there for a prize ceremony, beverages and snacks, and of course a football game. Will it be any good this year? Come find out with us!!!

Announcing this year's Spud Bowl winner ---

Scott's Plungers

The complete list...

And much discussion has ensued over the spud bowl. Much as I like the idea of everybody having something to play for in the last week of the season, it is clear from the response that nobody cares.

Before that, it was the teams with the two worst records --- but there were times when one or both did not submit a lineup.

So as a final question to you the owners --- what do we do? What's your suggestion to

and/or

See you at the Superbowl party --- this year at Brian's house in Spokane. Directions and an announcement of the prizes forthcoming. Also there will be (per commissioner's orders) an announcement of where the draft will be held in 2004 (so get those lists ready!)
